I want to get a blackberry not because its an awesome phone, but from what I have seen the battery life on them are a lot better than my power hungry Android.

From what I have seen BB users can use their phones with whatsapp, bbm, email and make calls the entire day without the battery dying.

I am currently on my second Android phone and with my fist Desire I thought its only my model, but my current Android phones battery life is not any better. If I am lucky I get maybe 5 hours out of the phone and that is with only using whatsapp and email enabled. I now have a charger at work, in my car and one at home so the phone can be constantly charged otherwise it loses battery power so fast.

Is this a problem with all Android phones or does the newer ones have better battery life ? I really dislike BB, but at the moment it seems like the only option.

thats why i have got a 8520. to take advantage of the comms. although i get my fix surfing on my tab. bb is abysmal for surfing on the 8520. i imagine its better on the bigger ones though. i need to find stuff to do with the MB's now because bb takes care of my data needs for day-to-day stuff...

This does not sound normal. I get between 1 - 2 days of power...but I dont use my phone a lot though. I have data and email and whatsapp. What I do do though is I set my phone to switch off its data connection between 10 - 06 and I have dimmed my screen, and keep my phone on 2G only.

HTC Desire HD MIUI Custom rom

1: Screen brightness Dont run at full brightness or even Auto, keep it on 10-20% and only go full if you in direct sunlight.
2: Radio switching (WiFi + 3G), don't leave both on all the time, schedule or get an app like Juice Defender to help you with this.
3: Widgets they eat battery juice for a living, if you dont need it dump it.
4: Dark themes with white text. White pixels use more power than black ones, esp on OLED based screens
5: Aletrs, only use vibrate when you really have to, you dont need it on key presses and what not.

Ja something is not right with your phone DigitalSoldier! I get at least 24 hours use on my Motorola Milestone 2 and that is with heavy all day use on WiFi. I use the app "JuiceDefender" to manage my data connections and screen on/off to save battery. Have you tried reducing your email/social networking sync schedule?

Oh I almost forgot my other secret.

Run https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zomut.watchdoglite, I paid for full so I don't get ads but its really helpful in letting you know when you have run away background apps like a Game that still running and consuming > 40% CPU usage or such.

Thanks a lot for all the tips will try them. My phone is rooted and all the junk removed. I am also running cyanogen mod. I'm a bit afraid of installing MIU as I have heard from some people that when the phone reaches 20% battery power with MIU the phone switches off.

this isnt an Android vs Blackberry issue

something is wrong with your phone

Its not a BB vs Android issue though. I merely stated I want to get a Blackberry as I am struggling to much with the Android battery usage.

Yesterday I got really fed up with the battery issue and turned on use 2G only. Then my phone had no signal at all. I am on Vodacom and in JHB.

Hmmm, what rom did you load and did you at least check what baseband your stock OS was on?

I installed CyanogenMod 7.1.0 -Desire.

This used to happen though before I installed the rom, so I am sure its not an issue with the rom. I installed the rom to remove all the factory junk and also to have more internal free space on my phone.

Hmmm, I use to get 3-4 days on my old Desire running CM7. But then again I had a Europe version and had to flash my own radio everytime I flashed CM. Dont know if this is still the case. I think they have moved away from including Radio's and RIL's in the roms?

Stock Samsung Galaxy S.

Initial setups and configs saw the phone's flattery last for less than a day.

Chopped and changed a lot - now I'm able to run gtalk the whole day long, battery lasts for two days or so...

@DigitalSoldier, good on y'er for creating this thread.

Hope you're able to solve the issue before obliged to change handset.

1: Screen brightness Dont run at full brightness or even Auto, keep it on 10-20% and only go full if you in direct sunlight.

1: I was mistakenly thinking the auto-brightness would improve things :o
3: Does an application tell if it's a widget or is there a general rule of thumb for this?
4: Nice tip. Easier on the eye to read in dark themes indoors too.

Thanks, Elimentals. I will try the app, as I too struggle to get a full day out of my SGS. I do use it quite bit and it is almost 2 years old, but going to look to see if I cannot up its "game".

Do you use gtalk for making calls too?

/heads off to play with SGS some more

3: Does an application tell if it's a widget or is there a general rule of thumb for this?

In general any open app that use CPU cycles eat battery power. If you value performance over form, removing the 15 weather widgets is a good place to start, also if you dont invest in stock having a ticker is a waste of battery power even if it looks nice. Having a single multi widget app open only using widgets from that app is better than having one app for time and another for battery and another for weather.

That is what I am talking about.

Also you will find that some applications are better written than others and consume way less than the rest. But here we getting into the more finer tuning of things. Only if you are as obsessed as me on what works best would I suggest installing Power Tutor and see which ones works best. Oh Power tutor might also be a good place to see where your power is really going as its way more advance than the default Setting list.

Oops totally forgot.

Live wallpapers.... Lose them, period.

My first and only Android phone is my current Samsung Galaxy Note, I get about 20-24 hours standby time off a single charge with moderate use. Of course the phone does have a slightly bigger battery compared to other galaxy phones (2500mAH).
