Get somebody to teach you how to use a gas cooker/gas braai.

This is South Africa, it should be required schooling material for all children over 12.

To quote myself from another thread about the lack of coffee during load shedding, in this case any frying pan or pot will also work.:

You buy a Bush Baby gas stove like below at Checkers (think its like R200) and its R29 canisters and then you can have coffee (remember you have to buy some kind of suitable camping or whatever kettle too, Bought mine at Midas, whistles when it starts boiling). Boils the water super quick compared to the small blue camping stove we used before

Easy to put the bottle in and the Lock it, then you turn the knob all the way and it click and ignites the gas and you are ready to cook.

We permanently cook now on a 2 burner gas stove . We covered the old electric hob and use it now as extra work space in kitchen
Would love to buy a gas hob but the 900mm is so expensive

I use gas whenever demand outstrips the supply of the generator i.e. like when computer is on and family members are watching TV

Get one of these. Lots of people use them without any problems.

edit: please don't

If you are desperate, you can always use your car as a cooker. I have made some truly epic toasted sandwiches by wrapping uncooked ones in tin foil and putting them in the engine bay before I leave to go home. Some people go quite crazy with this.

We use a Cadac gas bottle and cooker top. It's easy enough for simple meals, the problem is that you can only cook with one pot though there is a version with two plates.

For the OP, a gel burner would probably be best for you.

Get a gas stove and oven and then get somebody to help you overcome your fear...

R1449 for that when you can get a 57cm Weber for only a couple hundred rand more, or a 37cm mini Weber for half that price?

For me it's far more practical and heat efficient than a webber. Great for table top grilling as well.

As is the 37cm "Smokey Joe" I mentioned earlier (at half the price)

Any attachments for more than just grilling though? I can grill, fry, boil , roast and even bake with the cobb.
You can use any number of pots/pans/griddles on it, just like any weber grill, using direct or indirect cooking methods.

What are the options?

I can't imagine that a UPS would be very helpful here, and since I'm a bit... errm, accident prone... I'd prefer to stay away from anything that requires me lighting a fire or a match :) I also don't really have space to store a gas bottle.

Anything in the camping line that might be useful? Any solid fuel stoves? (I seem to remember a few years back liquid fuel heaters were all the rage, because the liquid wouldn't ignite if you spilled it... anything like available?)
