Cool Ideas fighting off a massive DDoS attack

Cool Ideas facing attack of over 300Gbps

The distributed denial of service attack on Cool Ideas reached over 300 gigabits per second (Gbps) yesterday and is ongoing, co-founder Paul Butschi has told MyBroadband.

Butschi said that the attack traffic statistics came from Cogent and Hurricane Electric in London. Of the total traffic hitting their network, roughly 40Gbps is legitimate.

Kudos to @TheRoDent @PBCool and the whole Cool Ideas team for all their efforts and long hours spent fighting a near impossible fight!!!

Have Cool Ideas run out of international data? If so why are they not buying more?

Cannot see how Hurricane and Cogent cannot nail down who it is????

It will more than likely be from a multitude of sources via compromised devices (be it malware infected PCs or IOT devices) the source will be obfuscated behind that, then behind some command and control infrastructure.

Would be great to have a follow-up article on how they dealt with the situation and kept their network from collapsing.

It would. ISPs understandably don't like to publicise such information as it helps these attackers figure out how to morph their attacks. Maybe one day I'll be able to do such an article :)

Our ISP's are being targeted more and more it seems, I wonder how much ransom the attackers will demand once they succeed.
