Cool Ideas fighting off a massive DDoS attack

How are they getting hit so frequently and cannot stop the attacks? It's happening way too often at this point to consider them a viable ISP. I personally know 2 people that are signing up for different ISP's today. Not because of this one attack but because of the frequency and lack of communication to customers that are affected.

Sad to see such a fantastic ISP being strangled like this
Yeah, most people are on their last straw, one more of these and they may as well just close their doors

I know if I had these kind of problems and I am unable to have internet on my fibre connection, I'd also be looking for a new ISP right now

People are sticking with Cool Ideas like they have shares in the place. In one breath moaning about lack of communication and in the next calling them fantastic.

I have been with Cool Ideas for about 2.5 years now. In all of that time, I have had only a couple of days that was completely down. This was mainly during the DDOS attacks, and there was one incident where a gas line blew, taking the fibre with it. In total, I would guess all of these incidents caused less than 10 days of downtime. So I have had pretty much 99% uptime in all of my time with Cool Ideas.

Also, when I joined Cool Ideas, they were one of the few ISP's that offered completely uncapped and unshaped connections. Other ISP's either throttled your connection after a certain time, or they charged a premium for an unshaped line.

Their lack of communication is not great, and it seems like the bigger ISP's do handle these DDOS attacks better though. It just might make me switch.

So no, I don't have shares. I have had a decent experience of the last couple of years. A weekend without internet is frustrating, but I am still alive. I had to spend time with my wife, and I found she is actually a very nice person... :)

These outages are honestly miserable, but I have to hand it to CISP who are doing better to communicate with customers. At the end of the day there isn't really much that can be done to stop these attacks aside from buying more capacity, but that also comes at a cost.
I believe we owe these smaller ISPs, like CISP, some loyalty as it really is these guys who are creating competition, driving down prices and changing the face of the internet in SA. If it weren't for them we'd probably still be forking out hundreds for megabytes to the larger monopoly.
I'm rooting for CISP!

Considering that the DDOS attacks aren't limited to one ISP, changing service providers seems a bit futile IMO. Looking for an LTE backup to tide us over, any suggestions?

I don't know hey, it seems that CISP is the one most complained about regarding these attacks. The bigger networks seem to have more capacity for mitigation. I don't expect full speed when the attacks occur, but I would at least like to load a web page or two during that time, which is sometimes impossible on CISP as far as I understand.

Not that I got a dog in this race, I am still stuck with my begging bowl with a crappy LTE solution until the fibre gods decide to smile upon me

I for one will not bow to the a-holes trying to sabotage CISP. Hulle moer! Not giving them the satisfaction. Would have the same stance if I was at another ISP.

I understand that some uses them for their business internet and can't experience downtime, but what sorted me out for a while during these attacks was to run a free VPN ex CPT to JHB and all was well.

And if you the A-Hole who is behind this is reading this and to coin a phrase from a clan member @stormiezzz : "Your Mother takes coins"

ROFL. Yep....just confirmed..
His mom does indeed take coins. Tiny brass ones.

Well the attacks are getting bigger every time. With that said CI aren't what they used to be. Network might be good but communication and customer service has gone down the drain which is what I said would happen if everyone starts flocking to them.

I also spent some time with this guy's wife, but she wasn't as nice to me :/
But speaking of CoolIdeas, they sent me some SMS updates and there were notices online.

Overall 5 down days in a period of time isn't terrible, and even then I could still access for example youtube fine.
