On the recommendation of this grouping, I sadly subscribed to Cool Ideas for FTTH as well as VOIP.

My router gave problems from day 1, but I was not sure and not being at home all the time, could not test regularly. My speedtests were erratic going from less than 1 Mbps up to 18Mbps (on their 20/10 package) and everything in between.

When my Telkom number was finally ported (this takes some time and probably not their fault), I discovered that the ports on the router did not work. I logged a call on the Thursday evening and the technician promised to send me a new router.

My wife runs a small business from home and we now don't have a landline for her to make and receive her business call as our Telkom number had been ported. When I followed up on Monday (after waiting 20 minutes on the phone), I received the response that they would investigate and get the manager to call me back. They had no knowledge of the router being ordered.

Needless to say the manager did not call me back and when I called again - 2.5 hours later (another 20 minutes on the phone waiting), I go the same message from the same person and asked for the manager again. Again he (I now established the manager was male), didn't bother to take my call and I was left hanging again. Still no urgency in getting me a router that worked, despite the fact that they had messed up.

The service has been unbelievably poor, and I am not even up and running properly!

If you are going to sign up with a company, make sure that they have proper representation in the town in which you live. Cool Ideas have to courier the routers around the country and if there is a problem, you have to put up with a delay. They are based in Johannesburg and I am in Cape Town.

Sorry to hear of your frustrations, please PM me your account name or ticket if you have one? We have people on the ground in Cape Town as well.

The saga continues. I received my new router yesterday and set it up. All working well.

I then contact the technical team to set up my VOIP phones only to be told be the technician that my number has not been ported and that he can't assist me. This is now a week after the Telkom number was discontinued. A full week for my wife's business! The technician promised to get the porting department to contact me in the morning (this morning). Needless to say this didn't happen and I had to contact them.

So I get hold of Nikki in the porting team and she says that everything has been ported and the number does show on their system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So are the technicians properly trained?

I have asked to speak to senior management, only to be told that they are not in yet (at 8:45).

There are some serious questions that need to be raised about Cool Ideas.

I will have management reach out to you right away.

Hi Dave, I believe your issue is resolved? From what I understand you opted to configure the phone yourself originally?

I am busy pulling up recordings of the technician that told you the number wasn't ported to find out why this was communicated to you over the phone when the VOIP team already had mailed you the details of the SIP account and the porting status.

Mission, business critical phone number should be a cellphone.

That is unfortunately the reality in South Africa.

Good luck!

Haven't had any issues with Cool Ideas myself, pity you had a bad experience.
