This is just a quick public service announcement as it caught me off guard over the weekend.

Cool Ideas has implemented CGNAT, so you may start being assigned these IPs randomly (see: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/cool-ideas-fibre-isp-–-feedback-thread-6.1279361/post-33357443)

If you don't know what this means, you probably don't need to care but if you are running services on your network that require external access and you are forwarding portson your router, this will no longer work when you're assigned one of these IP addresses.

You can read up here about this topic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrier-grade_NAT

The only option now is to pay for a static IP. Hope this helps some folks avoid the situation I ran into over the weekend.

IIRC they said it was meant for overflow and you CAN still get a public facing IP without needing to get a static IP

But yes - if you absolutely need public static might be the best / only way to go

CGNAT's on our general PPPoE services will only be allocated in the case of an overflow, or when our NAS's are rebalancing. Reconnecting should get you a general public IP once things have settled down. Reach customers generally receive CGNAT IP's the rest of our PPPoE base we endeavour to provide publics as a standard.

That's almost more frustrating not knowing if your services are suddenly going to become unavailable.

Basically if you need any external services to have the most reliable uptime you will need a static IP.

It's not the norm, as I said, and only happens when there was a big shift in BRAS traffic for some reason, e.g. maintenance, or major FNO flaps. It's better than no connectivity.

But yes, if you require a different level of service, then static is the obvious choice, or a business service.

Sorry, but it's the norm for many providers these days due to IPv4 depletion. A reset of your PPPoE will generally provide a new IP and in most cases a non CGNAT IP.
