Cool Submarine cable map site

Looking at them cables it is almost unbelievable that it is cheaper than utilising satellites. Anyone know anything about satellite communication?

Why use a cable to transfer info if you can relay info via satellite to the other side of earth. Is it that the people owning the satellites make it very expensive? For crying out loud, laying those cables and switching infrastructure can't be cheap.

Just wondering what the cost difference is and why?

Maybe it is a technical problem...although unlikely?

Really, how does DSTV work then, seems to be lots of gigabytes streamed quite quickly...

That's a one-directional satellite broadcast feed (Downlink) to multiple users.
Internet needs to work both ways - for just one user at a time.
You need to do a bit of reading on how satellite technology works.

But it's always nice for new people to see or some who may not have seen it before.
And it's nice to stare at and dream... :p

Haha I must admit that I was really amazed by the site and just had to let people know it existed. I hate reposts lol sorry.

Now I wish we could see a similar one for all the cables being laid down INSIDE South Africa.

Actually, its an uplink -> Satellite then downlink to many.
i.e 1 (or more) up -> many down.

You need to do a bit of reading on how satellite technology works:whistle:
