Mechanical Keyboard Guide

I will be selling my Steelseries G7 for about R700 (excluding shipping), it's 5 weeks old (remainder of 2 year warranty with Wootware), has nothing wrong with it.

Keyboard looks really good

Ill stay with my lycosa, price is too much for a keyboard in my opinion

Looks lekka! I just can't justify the price never having used one lol..
From what I've read, the black switches seems to be the better choice for me..

I have the black switches, and I game alot of bf3, but I think I till be getting the brown switch one next, black is just too easy to press imo and it causes me to make more spelling mistakes than normal :D

It's a pitty there it no way for you to test the different switches before buying, it's like a trail and error thing going on here lol. Reason I want to sell though is I need a kb with backlighting and macros.

Black is the hardest to press (60-80g force) out of the common keyboard switches. No click and no tactile bump/feedback.

Blues much lighter, so more mistakes but a dream to type (50g). Clicky with tactile bump.

Browns like blues without the click (45g).

Reds like Blacks (but 45g).

So Browns will be far worse for typing errors due to lower sensitivity.

I would say Blacks are better for FPS, if too resistive but like the feeling then get Reds.

Only the Blues are clicky. Others are much quieter on part with rubber membrane. I guess you haven't researched it. :)

well if you gonna waste money on this kind of this (imho) then do yourself a favour and go for the browns

I found blues bloody noisy and a little too hard to press

It's not a waste of money if you'll never go back. C'mon, surely you'd get browns if you had the chance? ;)

Both my Logitech Perfectstroke keys (scissor-switch modified rubber membrane system) and crappy rubber membrane keyboards feel bad in comparison. Less fatigue. Dream to type on. Well spent R750! I find it hard to believe it could be opinionated!

Geekhack.org for all your keyboarding geekdom...

Sadly we get the gaming brands which aren't always that good. For the most part the cm storm quick fire rapid is the best of the mechanical keyboards minus a few issues (keycaps, excessive branding).

However any mechanical is pretty much easier to type on than a membrane. It does depend on you preference. Obviously people have their own preferences for switches etc. Brown is a good choice if you are unsure in my opinion. There are other mechanical switches but cherry mx are popular because of Filco (plenty pro starcraft players use a filco) and the chinese market.

Regarding gaming it tends to be more of a comfort thing. Although the switch actuates at the halfway mark so your responses are ever so slightly better. Also the keymatrix in most cases is at least 6 key roll over where as many membranes (g11) have certain combinations that make it only 2 kro (the razer blackwidow is also 2kro)http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?29596-Ripster-s-N-key-Rollover-Guide. Over ps/2 mechanicals tend to be nkro. The other selling point is they can last longer, infact your keyboard is likely to outlive the keycaps it has on it (these can be replaced).

I find I enjoy typing much more now then I ever did on my old G11 on both my Red board and Blue board. If filcos weren't so expensive hell i'd have an mx brown board for sure.

Edit: Blues noise level is actually not that much higher than browns (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Island:6617)

Instead it is the pitch of the plastic that is bothering you.

Let me see if I can do this right, PmP can correct me, in order of loudness:

Blue, Brown, Black, Red

I would say generally yes due to the clicky sound of the Blues... But if Browns are lighter, then perhaps using the same force one usually types with, they bottom out harder and can make more noise? Either that or it has to do with the plate all the switches are mounted to which accounts for the Razer BW Stealth's audibility when bottoming out.

Pitch, not noise level is the difference. Red/Blacks are somewhat quieter but it's not a massive difference. Razer's difference probably amounts to that paticular recording or it's chinese-copy stabalizers and casing resulting in more resonance or something. All the other mechanicals on that list are also plate mounted.

Sound levels: Blue = Brown > Black = Red >= Rubber Domes.

There is something to be said for actuation point familarity. I used to bottom out a lot on the reds I have but since having a blue switched board I bottom out much less.

Yeah Blues are great if noise isn't a problem, sold my QuickFire Black and kept my Blue. My friend likes the low noise and higher resistance of the blacks.

I wonder if it's worth it to pay R200 more for the Reds on the Trigger, since I am using blacks now and kinda used to them, too scared to go for browns and I might not be happy with them. I really want to get the Trigger, I just need to sell my G7, PmP how much can I get for my G7? about 6 weeks old now.
