Hi,
My CPU is currently running quite a bit hotter than I would like (Stock i7 920) and I'm thinking about purchasing an aftermarket cooler to reduce my CPU temps a bit, I don't want to spend to much and probably won't overclock but if it leaves temps for me to do so I would be happy. Its currently idling at 50 something and goes past 80 in prime95 at stock. Which budget cooler would you guys recommend at around R300? Using a CM690 case and was looking at this cooler:

or this

Any feedback would be great, thanks.

Round 35 degrees and the stock cooler is really loud, will probably buy some extra case fans too, don't need it to be completely silent but don't want my PC to sound like a leaf blower.

Haha I thought about lapping but really nervous about that.. I see the CM Hyper 212 Evo just came out, need to see if there are any shops in Durban stocking this as TakeALot doesn't have it and I would like to use them for the free shipping but if I can find it in Durban I would rather do that.

The difference between the Hyper + and evo comes down to a mere degree or two, if you can get the hyper plus do it, I have it and have never been happier! Just beware it does take mild skill to install.

I don't mind the skill required to install, I will be fine with that, just want to know if the evolution will be worth an extra odd R40, being able to overclock a bit would be an advantage.

You are approaching the domain of minimum returns. Not worth fretting over.

So just get the 212 plus from takealot?

A aircooler will never cool your pc below ambient. On the other hand your pc will never run like that in 24/7 use like it does with prime.

If your machine will withstand a couple of hours of Prime95, you’re doing good.
If it’ll run over night, it’s bullet resistant.
If it’ll run overnight in the middle of the summer, in an 80 degree room, well, you really have something to brag about..

I wouldn't even let it do prime for 10 minutes currently, I don't want it to below ambient but would prefer it to be under 70 celcius at load.

Also does anyone know where I can find a hyper 212 plus or evolution in Durban?

Get a Koolance Exos-2 liquid cooler. You'll need the CPU and graphics blocks as well. Around R3.5K landed, with all the goodies. Can be transferred to new systems.
