This is not based on any hard facts (hey, it could even be called a conspiracy theory!), but I am slightly worried that COPE is merely a ploy by the ANC to ensure more votes.

It works something like this:

1. The ANC knows some voters are unhappy with lack of service delivery, corruption, etc.
2. COPE is formed as a breakaway party, pretending to be upset with the ANC for non-performance and hopeful of becoming the next opposition.
3. Many disgruntled voters leave the ANC and vote for COPE as an alternative to the ANC, in the hope of circumstances in SA improving.
4. After the elections, COPE and the ANC forms an alliance.
5. Voila! The ANC has the votes of their supporters as well as that of people who thought they were voting for an opposition.

Well look at the zim elections that other stupid ass ran and took away just about the amount needed for morgan to walk away the victor.

Could very well be a ploy, although i highly doubt it.

I have heard a couple of rumours that this might happen because COPE has upto this days not once denied the possibility that they might form a coalition with the ANC. All that they have said till now is that they will consider coalitions when the time is right or after the elections.

They have never pointed towards any party with whom they would prefer to having a coalition.

I got the feeling that they just maight form a coalition with the ANC.

COPE has been the ANC for many years, why would they not want to form a coalition with them?

I've thought of this as well and just to be sure, my vote is going to neither!

Somehow I don't think either party will give a toss as long as they've garnered the votes.

I've said it before - I predict a big kiss-and-make-up session between cope and anc post 22/04

It's way too obvious people... the ANC is scared of the DA... only because of Zille ... IMO
They can now see that things REALLY are ACHIEVABLE and can REALLY get DONE... by someone COMPETENT
Now they're afraid the VOTERS are going to see it TOO

So they devised a plan of COPE... all the fighting between them is just SMOKE
When the election is over... and the SMOKE clears... You will see them PUFFING CIGARS with a glass of wiskey together :D

If that happens, a lot of people would feel incredibly cheated.

Cape Town is being governed by a DA led coalition. Nothing wrong with dat.
No one feels cheated...as long as we keep the evil ANC out.

I doubt that the ANC was feeling so threatened by the DA that they would go to such lengths, aikhona!
The DA is more competition to the likes of ID, IFP and UDM. The ANC is in a league of it's own, even after the split.;)

Your example just makes things worse : have a look at what you're implying, in line with my OP about a possible ANC and COPE coalition. It will still be an ANC-led country.

How do we keep the ANC out, pray tell?

Look the problem you have is most of the voters are black, they will never vote for the white party that is DA, so the ANC does not need to worry about the DA because the black vote will never go to the DA.

This theory is a decent one but they did not need to make another party to get votes, does not make sense that would need to as the black population will vote ANC no matter what happens just like so many idiots in zimbabwe voted for mugabe when they had the chance to oust him.

It COULD be a ploy, you are correct.

"I doubt that the ANC was feeling so threatened by the DA that they would go to such lengths, aikhona!"

Well it wouldn't be about feeling threatened as that poster suggested, or winning/losing, it would be about tricking people into unintentionally giving 2/3rds majority.

You a bit slow, I had this theory earlier this year...
Waiting for it to play out...

I really don't think this is the case. The whole reason for the split is due to Lekota and others wanting to be in control and under the ANC they didn't have the power they wanted. So why on earth would they form a coalition with Zuma at the helm when they themselves want to be at the forefront of everything.

Wrong. A few weeks ago: Cope denies coalition plans with ANC
