Hey all

I moved to Wales almost 2 weeks ago, technically still unemployed here but can still do my South African online job until I do find something. I am doing okay as I am with a very supportive family. What made any of you decide to move and how did you cope? It's been up and down for me but its interesting to hear how others are coping too

Subscribing.
The current Mugabe'esque government, tanking of the economy, lowering education standards, instigated rioting and nationalization of our medical infrastructure and pension this has re-ignited a discussion we had a few years back.

I share his sentiment. It's getting to a point where immigrating is becoming a real consideration nfor us.

I was lucky as I was married to a saffer and met people right away.

The real secret is travel as much as you can in your host country. Get out as much as possible. See local festivels.

I have a thread here somewhere, we sold everything in wilderness, and became a nomad family with our 4 year old, we stated in Thailand and we are about to move to Malaysia for a few months before checking our Vietnam and cambodia, it is the best move we ever did.

We live cheap but have a better quality of life, can move whenever we want, basically we finally have freedom, the freedom to choose.

We work online and do workshops etc , recently we ha e started doing trades skills for accommodation and food in remote areas during our visa runs, there are plenty of those opportunities available.

Live local and enjoy your experiences and don't read the news especially not about south Africa :)

Wasn't particularly difficult. Had factors that made it easier EU passport, little stuff, good job offer etc

Where in Wales do you live now?

I get to experience the 'overseas move' thing through my wife: she's Romanian and living with me in South Africa, and there are a scary number of aspects of South Africa which are worse than in Romania - and that is considered one of Europe's country cousins.

Honestly it gives me a lot of pause when I think about just moving overseas. The language thing is probably the biggest barrier so for me it'd be important to live in an English country, or learn the language beforehand. Even visiting Romania with her on holidays and seeing the English books on a small dusty shelf in bookstores labelled "foreign languages" makes me queasy.

I'm over the race bullsh*t in South Africa too, but for the time being I'm getting some great work experience and I wouldn't want to chuck that away for something junior overseas. Just got to grind out a few more hard years.

I left for better career opportunities. Also to lay the groundwork for a "backup plan". That was quite a bit pre-Zuma, so there were fewer political reasons to leave at the time.

It did take a while to get used to the US, but now it's home. Usually it just takes time. Also, some locales may be easier to adapt to than others - it makes sense to explore to find the most suitable state, city, suburb, etc.

I moved 10 years ago. It took me about 4 weeks to find a job. I can't tell you how to cope, because that's something you need to deal with with and everyone's experience is unique. I can advise you to remain positive(which is easier for some than for others )

I would think that it would be easier to get a job in London, but the support you have in Wales is probably equally important and you rather stay in Wales, but you might need to be more patient :)

Aaaah yeah, I heard new zealand is beautiful....
The especially great part about New Zealand is that they also have land issues and if your child gets the same marks as a Maori then do expect that the Maori will get preferance when it comes to a UNI spot but yes you are right clearly better.

I think the biggest reason for people leaving is that they have convinced themselves that they are too good for this country, that and a lot of first world envy. It is natural though. We as South Africans are so indoctrinated with the constant stream of negativity towards our own country that for some it just becomes impossible to believe that anything good can come from here.
