100%. I think ours is set to only record on detection of movement so we can go back a week or so on any camera on the premises.

IOL released two stories on this at the same time:



I guess one was published in the Cape Argus and the other in the Cape Times. You need to read them both to have some clarity. It is best to see how this case goes in court, but the Johan van der Merwe dude... there are better and civil ways to handle such allegations on that estate. Van der Merwe is sure in trouble, big trouble.

The matter can't be blamed on the estate.

Also doesn't help that his name is Johan van der Merwe lol.
 
Ai....probably never get to the truth of the matter.

Good samaritan/citizen or cellphone/handbag thief syndicate - we'll never know without knowing the history and context of the lady.

I'm going to err on the side of the good samaritan and point out that, sadly, in SA today, she would have been much better off attracting the attention of a waiter with respect to the cellphone.

I have learned, to my chagrin, that even when you think you're being helpful, there are many people who don't appreciate your 'interference'.

So this restaurant must have had very little storage for the video to overwrite while the cops were on the way. If video can't even last a few minutes to hours the system is useless.
 
My personal opinion on this, now that I have read both articles and rewatched the clip several times. I can only conclude that van der Merwe grossly overreacted. He most likely has a short temper and doesn't explore any probabilities beyond his own nose. Could there have been an attempt to steal the phone, yes, but assault is assault.

This didn’t happen on his property; this happened in a public space on private property within his own space.

Him being in the mind that the woman had stolen his property, given the circumstances, then he should have engaged civilly. He has shown zero tact other than aggression.

There not being CCTV coverage, he doesn't have a case.
