How exactly does this work?
Im really annoyed with this rule, and now im thinking that maybe i am misunderstanding the rule.
Basically it says that you cant use pictures without getting the owners permission first.
So far I have e-maild two sites asking for permision to use their pics but havnt heard anything and its been a week now.
How do they expect the average guy to obtain pics for his website?
If im going to wait 2-3 weeks before they reply?
Am i expected to hire a photographer to take pictures for my site?
And every bloody website has that copyright stuff.

What sort of photos are they? Is there no way to be creative about them and change them to suit?

...well either that or:
- find copyright-free Images
- find CC licensed images see: http://creativecommons.org/ (and abide by the license)

Plenty depends on what you want to use the images for.

Nobody is obliged to reply to your emails or indeed let ou use their images.

I've found one of the best sources is flickr, as many photos have a creative commons licence. Have a look here for a good explanation/overview:

http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

You will see that the attribution licence alone has over 8 million works.

Attribution means:
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work - and derivative works based upon it - but only if they give you credit.

You can also buy photos relatively inexpensively from places like iStockphoto.com

@ fudzy
Its basically photos of football players, for my football website.

thanks for the advice bwana, texo, reech. Il look into that.
Out of curiosity...how strict are they when it comes to this sort of thing? say i see a pic on bbc sport and save it to my desktop and then upload it to my site?

I had to ask the owner for permission for the nike future car pics, which i will be using for my site in the future,He sent me a email the next day and i emailed him the layout of the site...he was so polite...never had to pay for them.

He even sent me photos that he scrapped...i guess you should try my way

I emailed capetown guy and he got me permission for some world cup pics but no luck with fifa or the psl website. They just never replied. So it looks as if if you ask a person they will help you out but the companys aren't really that helpful

its a real kick in the balls man. i was hoping have my site online by this weekend. But im persistant so il find a way, an old friend of mine plays for ajax ct so il try and get in touch with him again. Must admit i was tempted to just use some other sites pics but i want to do this the right way.

I know of a guy who helped himself to a picture from a news website for republication, then was surprised when a bill for a few thousand arrived in the post.

Photogs don't work for free.

You're always going to struggle with sports/news pics. I know cosafa has images that they're happy for people to reuse. I think your best bet is to speak to people that you know directly.

I think (but I might be wrong) if you use pics from another site in the way of promoting them (and not breaking down their reputation), you can actually use the pics. Maybe add a footnote that states "All images copyright by the respective owners" or something like that... It all depends on what you want to accomplish with the pics...

...sure, with their permission.

If I run the bbc news website, I'm not sure that Joe Blog's blog's promotion means very much to me.

If you are running ads or making money off of the site in any way using copyrighted pics without authorization is a quick way to get into a legal mess.

Places like getty images sell related photos but I expect they are rather pricey for a small startup.

What we need is Legal to come in and sort this out... :p

IMO - unless otherwise stated assume all images are copyrighted so be nice and ask. :)

Okay i did ask and 9 days later not even a reply.
I'm going to use some pics becuase i read somewhere that you can use picturtes if they are public figures and if the public has an interest in them. So all the pics i want are of football players which fall into that category.

Theres thousand of websites on the net and i'm sure not all of them have their own pics or permission to use other sites pics.

i did ask so i dont feel that guilty.:)

AFAIK while you can photograph pictures of public figures that doesnt make the photo fair game for you to use though.

Also - they're under no obligation to respond to your email.

You read wrong.

They haven't given you permission, nor are they obligated to. You haven't contributed to the costs that they incurred in getting the photos - don't assume they're free to use.
