JOHANNESBURG - Eyewitness News can confirm that former heavy weight boxing champion Corrie Sanders has died after he was shot while at a restaurant outside Brits, northwest of Pretoria.

It is understood he was shot in the stomach.

He was transferred to the Kalafong Hospital for further treatment but has since passed away.

Police say they are investigating.

Sad very very sad, I hope the murderers are shot and killed before being arrested.

Very sad news this. Boxing legend killed at his daughter's birthday for the sake of a few cellphones and wallets. RIP Corrie Saunders and I hope your assailants resist arrest when the time comes...

.
The ex-wife of shot SA boxing champion Corrie Sanders saw him being shot by robbers and described the night to Eyewitness News.

Sunette Sanders said robbers came into the Thatch Haven restaurant in Brits on Saturday night and started kicking and slapping people.

Sanders and her ex were attending the 21st birthday party of a nephew.

She became emotional when she told how Corrie dove to protect his daughter when shots were fired.

“I think he died a hero. He was just protecting his girl because they were shooting.”

Sanders was shot twice, in the arm and stomach.

News of his death has shocked the country and tributes and condolences have been streaming in.

Corrie Saunders killed in robbery.

If so the private hospital is in deep brown stuff.

They do that all the time, but legally they're obliged to stabilize you and send you on. The news says nothing about first going to a private facility though.

And people want to tell me how lovely it is to live in this **** hole?
Proudly SA indeed.

Condolences to his family.........

Why haven't you been able to emigrate? The only person I know who's tried and failed is my mate with a criminal record, he had the points even apparently though mess up once in your past and first world countries frown upon you.

Would that fall away if the NHI plan is put into action?

Again for the millionth time, my papers were submitted to Aus some time back, after the crash around the world they stopped taking in normal apps, only took in the skills shortage apps. Mine is in process.......the more you contact them via the immigration attorney the longer it takes. Believe me if I could just leave LEGALLY I would. I know you don't believe me but thats the way it is.
Maybe its just better to stay here and wait for something to happen, hopefully

I knew about Aus but I wondered why you didn't try other countries? If you can break language barriers, the world is your oyster especially if you're not tied down with wife & kids.
