Corrupted Outlook.pst file

run a chkdsk on the original machine where the pst is located, no point copying it if there is a problem reading the pst from the disk.

Once the chkdsk is finised then run scanpst.

I see this a lot, we have hundres of users with archive pst's larger than 10GB's :)

scanpst has yet to let us down.

He probably means what about booting of a live disk and see if you can copy the PST file to another drive or memory stick. If your problem is virus related then Linux would not be affected.

If you can not copy the file or the drive does the same you will know that you have worse problems than just a corrupt file.... like hard drive failure....

Yip, that's what I'm thinking.

Yeah, initially I thought it was drive related. Checked the sata connectors and power connectors hoping it was just a bad cable or connection. It's a relatively new 3TB hardrive (about 4 months) so wouldn't want to lose that.

I deleted the outlook.pst and copied the outlook.pst off my laptop which was a backup made about 3 weeks ago from the original on my desktop. Inboxed the missing 3 weeks worth of mail via browser and gmail and subsequently downloaded the mail to outlook where it's updated the outlook.pst

I assume if there any bad sectors on that drive they still there but as mentioned earlier, I couldn't do much with the damaged pst without the drive and/or pc crashing.

Will run chkdsk in any event and check if there is any drive damage..

this might seem obvious but if all else fails if your previous version settings were on you could always roll back if you don't mind losing a day or 2 of mail, which will most likely download again anyway if its not set to clear from the server.

Hi There,
Try your re-create of the PST and an import and hope that the vurus doesn't make it across.
Otherwise Kernel should assist you.

Regards

Tim

If you can copy the PST try Kernel's repair tool. That puppy even recovers from virii infected pst's

They have a try before you buy version (Will not recover the files but you will know if its possible, worse case you know you need to find someone or "someway" to get the tool.

See: http://www.kerneldatarecovery.com/download-pst-email-recovery-software.html

In fact even if the drive is shot you can get some of the data back.

:confused:I purchased a copy of Kernel Outlook PST and desperately need to use it to recover my Outlook files after having my PC upgraded to Windows 7 and a new i3 processor. I know where to locate the offending PST file and have run the recovery which produced all my folders as orphans. Can you or any other Forum Member assist me in the next step as I don't want to stuff it up any further than I have done. Reply here or PM me.
I'm really desperate as I have lost all my folders and need to recover records, some of which I deleted, especially those which belong to SWAMBO as my life is hell at the moment.

I am out of the office but maybe can help.

You referring to orphan folders after the scan?

:D That would be just great when you are back in the office. My name is Gareth and address is [email protected]
To recap, when My Backup of Outlook was restored all my folders were in the delete folder and I stupidly deleted them all. At 76 maybe i'm too old to attempt this crap.
I can locate the Outlook file C:\user\gareth\appdata\local\microsoft\outlook and ran Kernel which threw up all the folders as orphans and the filtered content shown in red as deleted. I don't know what to do with this data so I just quit.

Repair corrupt pst file

A longtime ago I moved it off my C drive (SSD) and onto my D drive (HDD 3TB).

A coule of days ago when Outlook was open and running the D drive would suddenly disappear from My Computer. Only restarting would bring it back.

It appears my Outlook.pst is corrupted.

Any idea how it can be repaired?

I tried Scanpst.exe but that failed.

TIA

Usually scanpst.exe tool fails to repair corrupt pst files when PST file is intensely corrupted. In such situation the only option which user has is to use any third party Outlook PST repair tool. They don't have such limitations. If you have doubt then you can use their trial version.

If you are unable to open PST file in Outlook its mean your PST is corrupted and need to execute recovery process. For the same query I have adopted an Outlook recovery tool helped me to recover damaged Outlook data within recovery of deleted items. If you still in problem then use same product that will help you to do your task securely. Overview: http://www.pcvita.com/recover-outlook.html

Outlook has actually been the cause of a lot of aggravation lately.

I've more or less sorted out the pst file but Outlook is perpetually indexing stuff!! A nuisance one only realizes when you need to search for a specific mail!!!

Tried a few solutions but none make any difference. I can only assume this is the remnants of a damaged pst file...

Been a while since I commented in this thread.

Turns out my hardrive is faulty and not the pst file.

Not entirely sure how the dynamics work but I think the correct terminology would be "bad sector". In essence a piece of data stored on said bad sector fails to work properly causing the pc to freeze and/or crash.

So when my pst file was located on the bad sector everytime I accessed it by opening Outlook the pc would freeze/crash leading me to believe the pst file was corrupted. All I could do with the file was delete it! Moving it, copying it, running it causes freeze/crash.

As data on the hardrive is constantly moving around it affects different files. So now I have a particular mkv file on the hardrive that causes the same thing IE when I play the movie the pc hangs and crashes!!

The hardrive in question is a one year old 3TB Western Digital green drive that I got from DionsWired on special for R999! It was installed in an HP external usb case so removing it and using it as an internal drive may mean voiding the warranty on the drive.
