A longtime ago I moved it off my C drive (SSD) and onto my D drive (HDD 3TB).

A coule of days ago when Outlook was open and running the D drive would suddenly disappear from My Computer. Only restarting would bring it back.

It appears my Outlook.pst is corrupted.

Any idea how it can be repaired?

I tried Scanpst.exe but that failed.

TIA

Have you tried the Inbox Repair tool from MS?

PS always work on a copy of the file and keep the original backed up in a safe place.

Yeah, scanpst.exe...?

Failed for me. Just remembered I did a re-installation on my laptop a couple of weeks ago and copied my outlook.pst over to my laptop from my desktop so just going to copy that back to my desktop and we should be good to go (barring a week or 2).

Do you by chance have a backup of said file before it became corrupt?

To be honestly corrupt PSTs aren't exactly good news...

I'm hoping so. The pst file currently on my laptop seems fine while the pst file on my desktop has become unusable.

There is a progam called advance outlook repair. It extracts youe mail in eml format. Had a couple psts fixed.

Move your pst file somewhere then open Outlook so that it creates a new one. Then import all info from the old pst file. Should work.

Why do people still use PST's!!!

This was one of my worst problems back when I did desktop support. Oh and did they finally fix the 2+ gig issue?

Anyway on Topic, if nothing works and you want to go commercial the best tool that I found for the job is Kernel recovery for PST. <- saved my ass on a couple of occasions.

Yep, 2+Gb issues is fixed.

Sadly, people now abuses it as they allow their PST's to go 20Gb's and beyond

Stellar Phoenix, used it a few times. but must admit, didn't buy it.

Yeah I tried Stellar and after about 5 hours of it running the PC froze up. I think the pst is either infected with a virus or damaged beyond repair. Trying to import it into outlook causes the drive it's located on to crash an disappear until I reboot.

If you can copy the PST try Kernel's repair tool. That puppy even recovers from virii infected pst's

They have a try before you buy version (Will not recover the files but you will know if its possible, worse case you know you need to find someone or "someway" to get the tool.

See: http://www.kerneldatarecovery.com/download-pst-email-recovery-software.html

In fact even if the drive is shot you can get some of the data back.

no gmail??

Gmail yes, thankfully. Browsing the trash folder and all the mail I'm missing since my last pst backup is there. Moved it all to inbox, open outlook and it all came down. Deleted what I don't need and am now making an uptodate backup.pst of my Outlook.

Moving or copying the pst proved challenging. About the only thing I could do with it is delete it. Moving caused drive to crash, copying cashed drive to crash, importing to Outlook caused drive to crash, importing to Stellar caused pc to hang.

I strongly suspect something attacked via Facebook but I can't confirm. About a week ago I was on Facebook and commenting in a heavily populated Breaking Bad thread. There were replies to my comment and I went to check one such reply. I noticed unusual page behavior and then my pc froze. Had to reboot to get it running again, first time something like that has happened in about 8 months. And that's where all the s hit began.

How does one limit the size though? Archiving messages? I'm currently at 12.5gb... The 2gb issue you referring to, is that the 2gb file size limit scanpst.exe can address/fix?

linux?

What's linux? I got less than zero experience with linux so didn't really consider it an option...

He probably means what about booting of a live disk and see if you can copy the PST file to another drive or memory stick. If your problem is virus related then Linux would not be affected.

If you can not copy the file or the drive does the same you will know that you have worse problems than just a corrupt file.... like hard drive failure....
