What would you do after being made a counter-offer from your current employer to stay on.
What would your deciding factors be?

I find myself in the current situation where my current relaxed office environment has matched that of a large consulting firm.

I need some food for thought please

Depends on the reasons, if it's pure financial then maybe consider, if it's something else, it will just raise it's head again a month or so down the line.

Don't take the counter offer. If they valued you that much, why didn't they give you a raise? Also the reasons you're wanting to leave will still be there (Unless it was a financial decision to move on).

Don't take it. 6 months from now you'll be moving on - I guarantee it.
I'm speaking from experience - my own and people I know.

^^ This.

Always ask: Why are you leaving? Most people leave due to other factors instead of money. The higher salary is a secondary benefit.

My original decision to move was growth opportunities within the company I thought were non existent. I never really had the discussion with them. It turns out I was wrong, they see me in a management position down the road or so they say

I was promised much needed training at our Head Office, more time in the office (I was constantly on-site), and the option to work from home one day a week. Then they snuck a 6 month retention clause into my new contract. Head-office suddenly stopped all systems training, and I ended up spending more time on-site.

Ja, be careful of that hey.

I was told time and time again that I'm being paid what I'm worth, that I'll never do anything like what I was doing, that they'll pay for Microsoft certifications.

6 months later I've gotten a job that doubled my money, they pay for studies (Like people actually take leave to go study at the company's expense) and the work is beautiful. Never seen anything like it.

I'd not accept a counter offer.

You wanted a growth opportunity. Your existing employer didn't realise that u wanted one. And now you are getting a growth opportunity in the form of a new job.
Don't accept the counter offer. You will regret it in six months.

I once took a counter offer. Good company but a dick boss so HR and higher management told me to stay because in future they'd be happy to bypass him plus he soon left.

In your current bosses eyes you are already a traitor and that stink will stay with you if you accept the counter-offer. Just move on.

I took a counter offer more than a year ago and it's been great. Got a substantial increase, same relaxed atmosphere, familiar people so it worked for me. I should also add that my reasons for leaving were financial.

They lie, believe me , they will promise you anything to make you stay, rather go to a company where there are real opportunities

Once the relationship is damaged, it wont be long before you look for yet another opportunity. Move on.

You can always go back to your current company a year or 2 down the line to take up the management position. Then you can be assured that you are walking into a management position, whereas now it could be empty promises, or not happen for a couple of years regardless. Stick to what you have decided, it'll look better for current and future employer.

Look at your reason for leaving, if money is the only reason, you could consider the offer. If there are other reasons, will the extra money make a difference? I don't think so.

I would accept the counter-offer and stay - It's much better in your financial interests. You can always leave later for more $$$.

It's a topic regularly visited on LinkedIn... The overwhelming consensus is that the relationship and trust has been tarnished already. It's definitely not a good idea to stick around... Saying that you are management material down the line is not tangible... As stated before, when a more senior position opens up, you can apply for it.

Once your employer knows that you have been looking for a move, stick to it and don't look back.
