Court bans Woolworths protests

Pro-Palestine activists have been banned from protesting in Woolworths stores, the High Court in Johannesburg ruled on Tuesday.

The order prevents members of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions SA (BDS SA) from organising, co-ordinating or encouraging any form of protest action in the stores.

It also orders representatives of the two groups to meet face-to-face by December 10 "in an attempt to settle the entire matter".

BDS SA initiated a campaign to boycott Woolworths over its trade relations with Israel following the war in Gaza.

On November 14, Woolworths applied for a court interdict to prevent activists from protesting inside its stores.

Woolworths welcomed the ruling.

"Woolworths welcomes the court decision to protect our customers and employees from unlawful BDS in-store protests," group director of retail operations Paula Disberry said in a statement.

"Woolworths respects the constitutional rights of protesters to express their views lawfully without infringing the right of others. We trust that BDS will respect the decision of the court," she said.

BDS regarded the court's decision as a "positive development".

"Woolworths arrogantly insisted for the last four months that they 'cannot see what a meeting would achieve'," BDS's Kwara Kekana said.

"This court order affirms BDS SA's stance and we looking forward to meeting with the management of Woolworths to make our case for why Woolworths should terminate its trade relations with Israel."

Reckon there needs to be a ShopAtWoolies support protest. I've consciously started buying schidt from their stores whenever I can.
Not because I give a fsk about Israel / Woolworths / the cause of the Palestinians ... but specifically to protest the hypocrisy of idiots like BDS.
@Woolies .... cave in to the BS of these malakas and I will go out of my way to convince others to boycott your stores

Why the heck should Woolworths have to agree with these critters where it gets its produce from? It's not like it is a major part of their acquired produce.

BDS SA should focus on the things that make a difference in South Africa, such as getting rid of the ANC in Government, getting the president to account for his fleecing of taxpayers, unemployment, poverty, etc. Plenty enough to do locally without wasting our time and theirs on insignificant and trivial matters which do not affect us. Swines!

If nothing else, their plight has encouraged me to shop more frequently at Woolies :twisted:

Yeh I started shopping at woolies more as well, but have yet to come across an Israeli product, pity, I would buy them if I could find them.

Their tomatoes i noticed are nicely labeled "Israeli Tomatoes" . I wasn't sure if this is a special type of tomato (that one only gets from Israel) or that it is simply from Israel, but the real question is, why are we importing tomatoes from the middle-east?

I'm not asking that for political reasons, but purely for agricultural/economical reasons, surely there must be a local tomato industry that can deliver quality tomatoes that are cheaper than imported middle-eastern ones? Is Woolies trying to say quality tomatoes can't be local ?

It's the same thing with their Strawberries , they have some from Spain or some place, and costs double the local rates, and then their local stuff is conveniently out of stock. While i like that woolies have some interesting imported products, it doesn't help me if it becomes the only option and all i wanted was a normal tomato

BDS supports terrorist organizations and I will stop shopping at Woolworths if they cave in to these terrorists.

The title of this thread is incorrect. Court hasn't banned Woolworths protests per se, only inside the stores. They can still protest outside the store.

The title doesn't say that ALL protests have been banned... and most of the BDS protests took place INSIDE the stores, thus making the title mostly accurate.
