Coverage in Durban - Your Personal Experience

Hi all

I'm thinking of porting my number to Telkom Mobile because MTN coverage in my area (uMhlanga) sucks.

Coverage in uMhlanga is good, but what about the rest of Durban? A friend tells me that coverage is poor even in areas that show full coverage on Telkom's map.

Your own RECENT experiences would be greatly appreciated. I'm interested in both cell reception for calls and broadband.

Vodacom hauls ass everywhere I've been in Durban.

I'm about 10kms north of umhlanga and recently got a B315 LTE router from Telkom - speed test tells me I'm getting 25Mbps consistently

Cell reception : very good. No calls drop.
LTE reception : very good, speed up to 55Mbps. Area: Woodlands/Montclair.

Glenwood Allan Patton Road - Speed is awesome, Coverage Perfect -69Db. Though the tower, wherever it is, seems to have a problem with DNS and then speed would just completely drop down to 38 kbps (384 line speed) websites won't work either except the telkom website. Since changing DNS permanently on router to google DNS, this has solved the browsing issue. The speed issue happens rarely now as well, could be 4am in the morning or 2pm in the day. Does not affect gaming since the speed required to upload and download packets is so low.

Otherwise Service is good, Just hold your breathe if you going to try call the helpline. Rather go online with the online chat on their website or go in store.


Last time I checked, TM uses MTN.
