I must say Telkom are really expanding their coverage very very well. I have yet to see an area in KZN where Telkom does not have 3G. I am comparing them to Vodacom's coverage.

At this rate Telkom’s 3G Coverage will be greater than Vodacom’s.
How long have Vodacom been at it? And how long have Telkom been at it? And Telkom seems to be ahead of the game.
:D

Remember all VC towers used to be allocated on Telkom land when they were one company so I would assume they have some sort of deal and thats why their coverage is spreading so fast ??

Also iv seen upgrades to towers with Telkom 3G on them (gsm nodes added) thou never picked up gsm telkom (1800)

When I do a manual network search, I get a SA 02 network....is that telkom? This is on GSM mode though, when I search for 3G networks, that network is no longer available...so that rules Telkom out does it not?

Yes "SA-02" is Telkom Mobi. I think the name will change on official launch

From what I understand. High cable theft & broadband Demand Area's are getting 3G & 2G. And low to nil cable theft areas with a low broadband demand are getting 2G (EDGE for internet).

Seeing as Telkom's 3G speed's are amazing and MTN's EDGE network can achieve 24KB/s (192kbps) speeds constantly. I am wondering how well Telkom's EDGE network will perform? Hopefully at max EDGE speed's. I was able to Skype 100% with MTN EDGE. (Vodacom well there EDGE is a fail!)

@CraigViking
Also remember that Vodacom has how many 2G base stations already up? So it would just mean setting up 3G equipment. So Vodacom have no excuse for expanding their 3G coverage slowly. If Telkom are moving at such an alarming rate should they be using Vodacom's existing Steel Masts.

A well informed reply! See my comments inserted in your quoted post.

TRUE - to an extent. Major metro and holiday areas will all be full 3G, but it will be susceptible to cell breathing. Other areas will initially be 2G

Initial WCDMA rollout is limited to Telkom's own mast and exchange sites, of which there are plenty!

Telkom - 2G - Going up right now

GSM = 2G - 1800mhz - TELKOM Going Up now as we type

WCDMA = 2100 = 3g - ALL areas with a Telkom exchange will eventually get a 3G tower.

The gsm rollout is 4 the rural townships.

Moggie has given u all the answers correctly.

Thank you DXL and Moggie. I was just confused, cause according to the Telkom coverage map, Cyrildene JHB have coverage (And as far as I knew, Telkom only deployed 3G), but when I did a 3G network search, it was not listed on my phone, but on GSM 1800 SA 02 came up together with the other networks, so was not sure whats going on.

I am rather dissapointed that I then obviously do not have Telkom 3G coverage. Oh well. :erm::whistle:

Hey Guys,

I saw that Sunninghill / Leeuwkop area in Johannesburg have good coverage. Can anyone confirm what average download speeds they are getting in this area? I really getting tired of Vodacom's exorbitant prices.

My experience is downloads in excess of 5Mb/s, and return traffic constantly more than 1Mb/s

Okay so if 4MB ADSL line maxes out at 425 KB/s are you saying this gets about 500 KB/s? Surely you don't mean 5 000 KB/s?

Here's a test I did while in Rooihuiskraal late last year...

I get those speeds at home in PE, which is in a zero coverage area!!! :wtf: :D

They refuse to give WCDMA service to my neighbours...:cry:

Does any body know if there is a good reception in Parklands, Table view. Ive been scummed (vodacom) for far too long

I must say the Telkom coverage of Durban is great! There's places where I don't even get Cell C coverage but Telkom 3G

Holy crap! Could these fast speeds be because there aren't many subscribers yet, so there are plenty of bandwidth?

This looks very promising, does anyone know if there is coverage in Potchefstroom?
