CPU advice please

Don't worry juggs, your cpu is slower no doubt but if you can overclock it then all will be good, get to 3.6ghz and you'll kick a q9300's ass plus you will have a much better mobo :)

A Q9300 at stock maybe, and still not all tests..

I understand Juggy has this "fanboi" thing that defeats all logic going on, and while I'm glad he's happy, the argument that he's waiting for the next big thing AMD produces begs a further question: Why couldn't he have upgraded to it when it actually arrives? Why spend more money on an inferior product to get you through the interim period?

I apologise if I cause you grief, I just don't understand.
I shall query no more..

The Hyper Z600 is R495 at Landmark Computers

"I saw both close up the other day, the z600 dwars the v8, and you yourself know I have teh z600, it's a lovely piece of copper and alliminium, it's compatable with all lga775 CPUs, and it offers more options, you can run it passive, with one fan, or with dual, the v8 on the other hand has one fixed fan, that you can't change, and you can't run it passive, it does have 2 more heatpipes, but I believe that the z600 disipates heat more efficiently, since it has larger scale airflow, and fore spread out fins, the v8 also has 4 sets of fins, 2 of which seem to be on the side of the fan, so I'm not sure howmuch airflow they even get, I'd vote z600, if you have the space"

I think thats a good answer

Yea but dude it is not like his computer is going to run 50% slower, may be slower and only slightly. considering the q9300 can only get to 3.3ghz on most mobo's if he got his running at 3.6ghz or 3.8ghz it would be about the same if not faster.

It's still 1 whole core shy of this argument you're trying to put forward, when it is at best speculation.

That's why I put 3.3 as most decent-ish boards would be able to achieve it. I'd love to see some benchies of a Tri-core against a Intel quad core at the frequencies you refer to, ..I'm pretty darn sure there would be no upset victory for the Tri-core.
You have to remember that the PhenomII's when overclocked aren't going to give you the same increase of performance clock for clock as the Intel chips do.

I'm not interested in how much slower it is, just trying to understand the logic of paying for a downgrade.

PhenomII X4 955 is a super chip, right now it owns 3DMArk06 and 3DMark05 world records :) (Thanks to K|ngp|n)

I dunno man, A Q9300 might be able to hit 3.3GHZ, but the 720 can hit 4ghz quite easily, and the Amd chip has more cache hey, I'm quite sure at 4ghz the 720 will perform quite well in all games :)

The 955 is only 200Mhz faster than the 940, I can OC that on my Hyper TX2 and then it's the same... but what about the price... :D

A decent cooler will be required for that, which means more cash, not to mention quite heavily increased voltage, and is still a whole core less. Intel vs AMD cache is not something you can directly compare.

Plus all this is mere conjecture, my point was that I don't understand paying more for less.
Anyhoo..

Use the driver cd that came with the mobo... Had almost the same thing and the only place where I could get the driver was on the cd.

YAY:clapsloudly:

Thanks for solidifying my choice for me.

Just managed to sell 8GB's of DDR2 800 transcend for R1000. I can get my 2*2GB 1066 Dominators now.

Life lokos really good;)

Get the hyper z600, i have it and all i can say is that its awesome. my x2 4200 at 2.8 idles in the low 30s and does not even go over 45 degrees when under 100 percent load with it

Have you tried unlocking the 4th core?

Mine unlocks nicely cpu-z detects it as a phenom 920, boots up and all. However Prime95 stress test is not happy with the 4th core.
