Hey Guys.

I'm looking into upgrading my PC. PC is mainly for animating so it will need 16Gb of Ram. While browsing processors and motherboards I noticed that Intel i5 processors are socket 1150, however most of the motherboards I find are socket 1155. Are these compatible??

Here's an example:

Is this motherboard:

Compatible with this processor?

Thanks in advance.

1150 = 4th generation cpu (4xxx)
1155 = 3rd generation cpu (3xxx)

Then there's the socket 2011 but forget about that :)

In my opinion, rather go with 1155 Sandybridge (2nd Gen) because they run much cooler than Ivybridge/Haswell due to solder instead of thermal compound.

Uhhhmmm.... No. Rather go 1150 (Haswell), for future upgrades/more features. I don't think he will be overclocking...

Yeah this is not really for gaming and overclocking. More for animation etc.

Here's what I had in mind:
1 x Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti - GDDR5 PCI-E 3.0 Graphics Card - 2GB
1 x Gigabyte Z87M-D3H Socket 1150 M-ATX Motherboard
1 x Intel Core i5 4570 3.20Ghz Socket 1150 Processor
2 x Patriot DDR3 1600 8GBK 2X4GB VE CL9 Dual Channel Kit - Black (Total: 16Gb)

I already have 2 x 240Gb SDD Drives and 1 2TB SATA Drive

I currently have..

Intel Core2 Duo E8400
Force3D HD4850
4 Gb Ram

So this should be an improvement, what do you guys think?

What applications are you using?

I'd suggest like the Asrock H87 Pro4, because it comes with software that allow you to create a RAM drive, that you can use as a superfast scratch pad for like Adobe PhotoShop (and I suppose like for Premiere/AfterEffects too).
There are free RAM drive software available, so this shouldn't prevent you from taking the motherboard that you'd like :) This Asrock motherboard is cheaper though and its real good value for money in my opinion.

Also, it may be worth while to rather go for 2x 8GB memory modules now, so that you can upgrade to 32GB in the near future without having to sell/replace 4GB modules.

The i5 CPU will be dramatically faster than your C2D if the applications support multi-threading, which they typically do when you render stuff. If your rendering processes are taking long, then it may even be worth it to upgrade to an i7 instead!

If you have an OEM license, then you'll need a new one. If you have a Retail/Enterprise Windows 7 license, then I suppose you can just reuse it.

I speak under correctly, but I believe that DSP is a single user (non-retail) license that you as a user can buy afterwards, where as an OEM one is bundled by the PC manufacturer (eg. Dell/HP/Acer, etc.).
So you cannot buy an OEM license separately from the PC/laptop.
