CPU at 73C!

I have an ASUS P4800se and it gives me in an airconditioned room:

37 degrees at a fanspeed of 2057 rpm.

You need to show us the innards of your box. An outside pic and a couple of inside shots. I think you have a possible airflow problem. If not it is definitely the seating of the chip.
 
I have seen a few Intel P4s giving heat problems, I nearly cracked up when the one dude said he got Intel because he heard that AMD ran hot.... Well I was thinking I could either laugh or rip his head off and dance around the room with it. Anyway they ended up spending about 1K for a water cooler, foolish earth creatures.... (not from me BTW)

Other person bought one for a recording studio, only problem is he was getting complaints from the people at airport that they could not hear the planes land because the CPU fan was too loud, he was a bit ticked off when I told him that the 939 system in front of him he was in fact on and running, and it did not run hot, and it could up-grade to dual core (Which Intel could not do at the time) - Again the same old story, ohhh don't buy AMD they run hot, you can still phone computer shops and some berk will tell you that

I also have one P4 3.0 GHz but the idle temp never goes below 50c if I make a backup in DOS mode the temp reaches more then 70 degrees and on restart I get Intels monitor warning. So before I switch on, I have to check the room temp. Where can one get Arctic Silver in Pretoria ? Another P4 2.67 GHz never goes above 40 degrees and works silent not so the 3.0 GHz sounds like an Aeroplane taking off Any help appreciated

Everything is stock in my system and the cpu isn`t overclocked. How can I reduce the temp?

These CPU's run at a high temp. Mine used to run at close to 80 degrees as well, also used to get constant blue screens. Thermal paste will make a difference but you can save yourself some dosh by simply cleaning out the dust from the heatsink. My CPU runs at 40-50C now, which is ok for 3.0Ghz P4.
 
If the heatsink is properly seated I very much doubt arctic silver make much difference. Either get a better heatsink or try the arctic silver at R90 a pop (yup that's how much a tube costs). Might be dust, but I've seen some serious dust bunnies before and they didn't cause the kind of heat you're talking about...
 
It is not dust on my heatsink, since I recently changed, but the temp did not change maybe 2 degrees less, but I still don't know where in PTA I can get arctic silver?
 
Solved my CPU heating problem. Temp are below 48 deg and I purchased a Gigabyte 3D Auora Case 570, and a 3D Rocket GT CPU cooler is now my third Case for it but now everything is working and no noises of Fan's anymore.
Even the Temperatures remain stable, the only little Problem is that now the blue led's on the Fans do to the low speed are flashing like in a disco.
 
I've got an Intel Mainboard and if the temp reaches the preset level above I think 73 C the alarm goes off.It is also P4 3.0 GHz but 478 socket. So it was now the third CPU cooler . The one before sounded like an Jet taking off, if I set him to max speed, Also 4 120mm Fans in the cases before. But the new case and CPU cooler is really worth the money. So I can switch now on even if the Temp outside goes up to 35 C. Backup using Norton Ghost every time the alarm went off. That was my first test and no problems anymore and totally silent.
