Hi.

I want to purchase a CPU air cooler, and would like some advice ... I am looking at the following coolers, and advice as to which one of them, or any other choices? I have a Asus P5K Deluxe Board, so the cooler must fit with the silent pipe still on the board. Please also consider the price as well ...

Thermalright Ultima-90 Heatsink + 120mm low DBA fan
Cooler Master Eclipse CPU Cooler
Gigabyte GH-PSU21-FB Volar CPU Cooler
Thermalright SI-128 SE Heatsink
Thermalright HR-01 PLUS Heatsink
Thermalright Ultra-120 Heatsink
Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme Heatsink
Thermaltake CL-W0037 Volcano 4005 Heat Exchanger (Heat Source Block + Radiator) - Is this one self contained, or does it need a water cooling system, I was a it confused.
thermalright iFX-14 - This looks like the best option so far if I stick two 120 or 140mm fans to it. Do you think I could hit 4ghz on a Q6600 with this or is that just wishful thinking? Will it fit inside a Coolermaster CM690?

Regards

Itai

Thats what I've heard. But if thats one of the bet, then the iFX-4 must be better ... its the same thing, except times 2 as far as I can see. I'm assuming I should be able to hit 4ghz cause ATM I'm running 3.6Ghz @ 60c idle, but I'm not pushing the pc ATM because performance brings it up to 80c ... but I'm assuming this cooler should make 1 hell of a difference to be able to take it up to 4Ghz.

You should be able to reach 4GHz easily within acceptable temperature limits with either of the coolers (excluding variables such as the motherboard's overclockability) especially since it's already running at 3.6GHz :)

60 deg C at idle is suicide !
The Ultra 120 Extreme is not going to give you the numbers you need at 4.0G.`s.
Im on water at 3.6 G at 1.4 V and see 49/50 deg C at full tilt..

Overclock.net..check it out.

I think it'll depend on the temperature that he is comfortable running the chip at. I personally get uncomfortable when my CPU reaches 60'C under full load...

Well my normal idle temps are 50c and normally full performance at about 63c. When I get this, I will also give my box a total of 5 or 6 120mm case fans. You sure I won't be able to hit it even with the iFX-4? Intel rates that only for every 10c after 70 your processor will lose 1 year. I'm checking out the site now.

Agreed...when I hit 3.2 and then 3.4 I was running 35/39 deg C with prime95 and small fft`s...The jump to 3.6 and the higher Vcore pushed temps up dramatically..
Im already not happy with 50 deg C on my rig.

Sorry, those were idling temps in the midday heat...Prime I saw 40/45 deg C...

Rather edit your posts than posting a new one to correct the previous one :)

I'm using stock cooling with my Q6600, should actually upgrade that soon :o

Its not that so much as the throttling that starts taking place at high temps...

Im running a tornado in my case-11 x120mm and 80mm fans all over..

At the 3.6 mark, I haven't increased the VCore, and it is running stable on my system. Just out of curiousity, which water system you got and what board?

In terms of the earmuffs, I will be sticking in a 6xchannel Fan speed controller and I won't get a fan more than 20db. I see there are some thermaltakes at 17db. Also, I already have 3 x 120mm fans in my case and its barely making a peep ... once I add those to the controller, and turn them down when I don't need them ... my PC will be as quiet as ever :P

You should've heard the noise in my old PC ... this is a dream for me :P

I've currently got 3 x 80mm fans in my PC and the noise irritates me sometimes :o Still keep my PC turned on 24/7 though. :D

if i was you, addon a few additional venting fans (to take heat from inside the casing , outside)

As for heatsink / fan aircooling. Most of these models / brands are good. Prices do differ alot.

Just remember 2 things,
1. Copper is very cool vs normal Aluminium so opt to go for that.(cools down much quicker)
2. Any fans that say they are low-db usually runs quite slow. (so u gotta decide noisy but fast fan or slower but less noise)

Hope this helps :>

I just made a stupid discovery, Windows is assessing my speed wrong. I've set it at a multiplier of 8 in the bios with FSB 400 to give me 3.2 ... and Windows is reading it as though it was a multiplier of 9.

I've got a B steppinf Revision G0 ... which was the better q6600 to have, because I know there was more than 1

Well most of them are rated like 17 - 35 dba ... so it just depends on how much I am using the system. I will turn up the fans when needed. But I will be having as many case fans as my case will take ... 3 blowing in ... 2 or 3 blowing out ... (blowing in from the front and bottom, blowing out from the back and top.

Also Big Kriss, what software are you using to get temps. According to speedfan, my CPU is idle at 63, but Core Temps are at 39 each.
