I had a Thermaltake Blue Orb Cooler which was doing a good job until this morning. First I noticed that the CPU was running at 70+ (not even under full load when it's normally in the 40's) and that it was very noisy. So I opened up the case to take a look and what did I see but said cooler literally hanging by 1 screw:eek:. Somehow the other screw had snapped clean off (don't know how; pc doesn't get moved around)'

Took it off with trembling hands (I shudder to think what the effect of a almost 900g cooler would be when it falls directly on top of your brand new graphics card) and replaced it with the stock Intel cooler.

I now need recommendations for CPU coolers. For obvious reasons I'm no longer very keen on Thermaltake because it seems as if their products are badly made (cooler was only 6 months old)

Why not just replace the screws if you were happy with the cooling you were getting, otherwise go for zalman or thermalright not much seems to beat them nowadays.

Thermaltake suck, no offense to you! But now you know.

If you truly want to go aftermarket get Zalman or Thermalright CPU cooler. Thermalright is the best atm but quite expensive although the Thermaltake is even more expensive even though it's a piece of sh*t.

What exactly went wrong? The copper can't be damaged so you can just replace the fan with another if you don't feel like buying a new cooler.

Also just a side note, once the Intel stock cooler has been removed some of the residue will be very hard to remove and your not supposed to use the thermal pad again (IE. you need a new one).

Get yourself a Zalman CNPS9700LED.

It's the best aircooler I ever owned.

I don't know what went wrong exactly. Like I said there is no way the PC could have got a shock bad enough to cause that damage (it would have put a serious dent in the case for starters). My guess would be inferior materials that aren't up to the weight of the cooler. The cooler is mounted with the following

Anyway will check out the recommendations

ouch, those screws look a bit thin.

I bought a Cooler Master Gemini II, was a mission to install and had to buy fans for it, but it has worked like a bomb since I installed it.

Throwing my 2 cents in quickly

Try the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and Liquid Pro Metal Thermal Material.

That 2 should keep the chip quite cool. Just clean it well before using the Liquid Pro. That is one odd substance

There's still the 120 Ultra Extreme :p but the Ultima-90 I think is the best bang for buck at this point.

If you want the best cooler then go for the Ultra 120 extreme. If you want a cooler half the weight then go for the ultima 90 which cools better than any of the other coolers mentioned here except for the ultra 120 extreme.
You do need to buy an additional fan for both of the ones mentioned here.

Look here for a review on the Ultima-90. It goes for about R430 ATM.

Ive got The Zalman 9700 as well.

Cooling My Q6600 at 3.2Ghz very nicely at low RPM.

although you could get a 9500 at half the price that is 80% as effective.

Thermaltake is crap

Also

Be careful of some reviews. Testing a cooler on a open bench is not a good test. The thermalright and zalmans are so effective becuase they work with you case fans, not at a 90 angle to them.
