I dug out an oldish machine to use as a headless server but the CPU fan isnt spinning. The fan works fine so I'm presuming there is a problem with the MB. Any suggestions?

I used this adapter to check the fan works
picture.php

could I run the cpu fan full time this way?

Well yes it will work 100%, you just need to give the cpu fan power either via motherboard or molex like you have done.

Ahhh - I was wondering what it was called - thanks :D

Did you try turning off the BIOS' ability to self-control the CPU fan?
i.e. Perhaps the BIOS has stopped the fan because the chip simply does not yet require cooling.
Yes, it is a long shot, but it is winter.

Nice soldering skills bwana :)

Just check you are using the correct supply voltage of the fan.

Cant take credit for that - I just had it lying around. :)

My soldering skills arent bad though :)

I'll try that thanks.

Can't really comment on his soldering skills as it's covered in heatshrink, but I have to say, very nice and neat and good photography skills as well ;)

I'm actually in the process of sorting myself a headless server as well to handle all my caching and firewalling and do a bit of file serving. Going the Atom route. Just need to find a case for the thing that's tiny and closer to R200 than to the R1200 I've seen them going for. Ripoff. I really would prefer micro-ATX instead of midi :(

Ahh, the value added hidden benefits of heatshrink ;) other than insulation.

I am also revisiting my old setup to achieve a similar setup. What are you guys using to access it, VNC?

A buddy of mine's going to help me set it up (He's quite a hell of a lot better than me at Linux-related goodies) so I'll see what he recommends. I have had only good experiences with VNC so will stick to that if I can.

Look into IPCop or pfSense as a firewall base system and add to it. Can be managed by pointing a web browser to the machines internal ip address.

I just got a sms notification from pc zone this morning that I still have a credit with them, pondering (no pun) whether I should go pick up one of their atom mb&cpu combos....
