I bought a 6950 in order to play Rift at a decent framerate, as an upgrade from my GTX275. I've been running it for a while now, and have to say, I was expecting some solid performance numbers, but I'm not seeing them. There's no real benchmark so to speak, but quite often, even in areas/situations where there should be no stress on the card, the framerate dips to below 30fps, which is quite noticeable on gameplay.

My CPU is "only" a Core2Duo E8500 running at 4ghz - is my framerate CPU limited?

Could be RAM limited as well. I had the same problem. Bought a 5850 but had it running with an older Athlon 64 6000+. Then upgraded that to a Phenom 1055. Made a huge difference. Crysis used to detect mainstream, now up to gamer.

RAM? You really think DDR2 instead of DDR3 could account for such crappy performance?

What games?

What settings are you running? In general the console ported pc games run better on a quadcore. If you are running high settings with AA enabled then you will struggle when the graphics becomes intense. A lot of console ports also just run crap on a pc setup.

BFBC2 is a prime example of this you can be running 100FPS then the shyte flies and you dip below 30.

The game is Rift - it was written for the PC, so a dodgy console port isn't the problem. I've got 6gb of DDR2 installed, so I don't see that as being a problem either. It's running on 2xAA - but the framerate dips even when AA is not on.

did you download the latest drivers for the card?

Yeah, latest drivers too. Basically I'd like to know if that CPU is "aging" and limiting the framerate - ie. if a CPU upgrade would make a dramatic difference - or if there could be another problem.

could very well be, could be the game itself too though, I remember there was a 3rd party fix for Fallout NV has raised fps by like 20, have you looked if anybody is having a similar problem?

yeah cpu limited those mmo's. in wow with q6600 at 3.6ghz i hardly got over 25 fps in heavy 25 man fights :(

though my e8500 did about 30fps at 4ghz.

though i7 i don't see less then 50fps :P

You running 64bit? Why don't you give a complete breakdown. Then again, it seems that the culprit has been tagged as you CPU..

Old/slow CPU.
Old/slow memory.
Old/slow FSB.
Old/slow PCI-e slot.
Old/slow HDD.

Any one of the above, or combination of, or all of - is the likely cause of your problem.

A computer is only as fast as it's slowest component.
That rule applies across the board, to any setup.
