CPU temp fluctuating wildly

Running Prime95 now, temps went up to 69C, now sitting at 67-68C. So it doesn't seem too bad?

iirc max for that chip is 73°C, but with an air cooler those are the kind of temps you'd expect. The stock cooler actually hits 73°C. I can check my chip at home, see what it's like.

BTW - high temps in the bios is actually normal, for some reason the CPU actually does a fair whack of work while you're in there.

edit: and a quick google suggests 40°C at idle is not out of the ordinary either

It is just annoying that the temp is all over the place, I can hear the fan speed up every now and then as the temp goes over 50. I am afraid something might break, but the temp has never gone above 70C about and the PC has never shut down because of over temp. So it should be ok, but I still don't know.

70?

I push mine to 91 :)

Seems like it. I am googling now and someone recommended HWInfo on tomshardware. Running this it shows 5V at 5.045V and 12V at 12.232V. So I probably didn't need a new PSU even though this one is a lot better than what I had.

Problem is even HWInfo shows the CPU temp varying the whole time. All 4 cores show an 8 or 9 degree variation.
Well, next time have multimeter handy. Regarding CPU during Prime95 test, it is normal that CPU temperature reaches the maximum, then drops down core voltage to lower power consumption. What happen when iddle? I understand there are variation about 8 degrees. What happen if you boot from Hiren's CD, still variations?
