CPU Temperature 74C!

My 3.2 P4 gets up to around 65 degrees under load. There is a tool that warns you about clock throttling (forgot the name for the moment), anyway if I don't leave both covers of the computer off it appears to start throttling when room temp is high.

[Edit]
RMClock is the name of the tool.

Gigabyte Duel Fan Copper Cooler

I would say you have a problem :(
Never seen mine over 62c + except on Half Life 2.

Are you sure heatsink is on properly?

hmm thanks for all the input, heatsink on fine, could just be the hot weather, PC kind of boxed in under an oak desk and I can't take the sides off coz of the toddlers, guess I'll look into some better cooling options and lose my 5% o/c till I do.

I had a problem withy mine 2.8G hitting 75C when idle last summer.
In the end I decided to disassemble it and have a look.
The thermal grease looked like it was only applied to one half of the chip, so I spread it around re assembled and it's never exceeded 65C since then.

I had a similar problem with my celeron. Turns out there was a lot of dust stopping the air from cooling down the cpu area. Check inside your machine and make sure dust isnt the issue

well my 2.4 GHz intel is running on 43 degrees with the standard cooler ... I don't see this as a problem.

upgrading to 3 GHz soon, so will see how it goes there ... maybe you guys should not overclock your cpus, I don't, the PC bottleneck is hardly ever in the CPU anyway

My 2.66ghz celeron is running between 70 - 78 degrees with a case temp of 46. My 3.0ghz (2MB cache) is running around 60 with a case temp of 38. Both are running at 100% while processing seti@home data

the other thing that probably contributes to your problems guys, is that most likely you are using this stupid little cases. I hate them. I have one big full tower, and one big medium tower, although there are 2-3 hard drives in each and 2 optical drives in the one, there is still plenty of space for the airflow, and I don't use any fancy fans and crap like that, that's for the kids ....

i will check my Asus probe to what is the max it can get its threshold. But idling at 52, is it normal for Intel CPU's?

Oy man, I need sleep. I read that as 'anal probe'.

:D

And now at last the circle is complete

My AMD64 3000+ runs 28 -32 C - I suppose now no one is going to buy Intel because they overheat

I have an Xcube [small little case] with a 2.8 Prescot and my 6600GT squeezed in there . My temp alarm usually goes off at 50 degrees [and primarily occurs when i play games].

Turns out, if i open the empty floppy drive slot, place a large fan[as in the ones you use around the house] in front of it , the temp easily stays at 40-45 even in high stress areas. I would take off the cover, but then it just ruins the whole look of having a little box on your desk looking like a HI-FI.

Of course it being summer means its hot in general, so the fan have two purposes ;)

i also have a box like that, its called a gemecube but it doesnt overheat that much though... :p

Being boxed in in these desks can be a problem - there's not enough cool air around the case, and the PC heats up somewhat.

What sort of case fans do you have? If you have simple 80mm fans, it may be worth replacing the fans with 80mm blower fans, if you can get them, and/or adding slot fans. That could bring the inside-case temps down quite a bit.

k removed old thermal compound (rather gunky) new thin layer of thermal compound added.

installed fan that sucks from the front of box (blower)

did some burning temp never went above 52%

Either it's fixed or it was just hot yesterday
