Crackdown coming on illegal software users

Le Roux said SA’s software piracy rate stood at 36% of all software sales, representing about R1,2bn in losses to the country, including fines and missed economic opportunities.

36%, not 35.5% or 36.5%. How does he know that?

The R1.2bln cost to the economy should be offset by the lower running costs of those using pirated software. We know how much damage Telkom has caused the economy with high telecomunication costs. How about the damage caused by excessive software pricing? And, even worse, most of that money heads off out of the country.

The R1.2bln also assumes that someone pirating software would actually pay for the product if they couldn't get it for free. That's a huge assumption.

Software producers need to find better ways to discourage piracy. Rather than weilding a huge stick, they should aim for greater volumes at much lower prices (or even for free), and service their larger client base with additional/complimentary products and services.

Let's see, the choice between the hassles of BS-A fines and using free Open Source alternatives that are just as functional as an overpriced M$ package knowingly shrink-wrapped along with thousands of bugs, hmmm I prefer Open Source thank you very much.

I never sell my cracked software. I share them :D. I just think it's wrong making money of something that's not yours. But sharing it for free I find ethical. Ok Flame away :p

hmmmmmmm....ethics needs to be a 2 way street...if m$ can show me theirs i'll show them mine

Isn't piracy only when you sell illegal software/music etc?

Having said that. If I get my Officee Suit for free or my Windows, then it isn't piracy as I didn't actually by the software from someone.

This is having an impact on their efficiency and data security and ultimately on our economy

It is hard to take an organization seriously when it can't make its point without putting outright lies in its press releases.

But then again I don't think anyone takes the BSA seriously anyway.

At the end of the day one begins to think that maybe MS actually dished out the first pirated copies of windows and office to gain market penetration. How many people got accustomed to windows and office because they got it for free, millions all over the world. I think it was a marketing strategy just like the mod chips on the PS2, to gain a large user base and ultimately boost sales to corporates who would use the software. Now corporates are also pirating so it kind of backfired. Well thats my two cents. I don't think the BSA is really concerned about the rest of the, remember the B in BSA stands for Business.

Why don't the BSA offer rewards to people for reporting illegal software, that will defnitely work. Like a percentage of the fine. They will surely get a much higher success rate...

I got an email once from the BSA, I sent them a polite message back saying ****, and come back with a court order.

I dont know if they know that network has no non-OS products...

They'll probably be visiting me again so I better start planning a reception for the fsckers :D

[JUST_KIDDING]For giving M$ a big tip off, you get an XBox360 and a copy of Crackdown.[/JUST_KIDDING]

Sounds good to me. Seriously the BSA should consider doing this and then I will go and become a software piracy bounty hunter, I already have a few leads

There was a recent court case against both Telkodemonopolies and Macaroni SA for infringing on the software copy-rights of another company [company's name escapes me] after a certain cut-off date when Macaroni SA no longer had rights to use the CNEM's software - I vaguely remember it had something to do with PBX, anyways it might be an idea for anyone using such a PBX from Telkodemonopolies & Macaroni SA, installed after that cut-off date, to contact the BS-A and demand their reward for reporting Telkodemonopolies & Macaroni SA being in violation of copyright...
