Sometime between now and xmas bonus I want to get a big ass HDTV. I recently helped my bro pick out a 40" 5000 series LED backlit TV.

I'd like to get a Sony, but not familiar with the different ranges. For Samsung I know I'd need a 550 or 5000 series. What would the equivilant be for Sony TVs?

I'll be using the TV on my PS3 and with my PC.

err, don't get a SONY, seriously. They're not the same company that they were 10 years ago. They're just relying on their reputation now.

Stay away, their new entry LED backlit LCD "CX520" range is complete dirt. Have seen a few of the 46" and they have terrible backlight issues where even on full settings the screen still appears dim.

Forget about Bravia Sync and get Samsung.

I would not recommend LED backlit either as it has worse colours and lighting problems than CCFL backlit LCD.

Go Samsung LA40D550/LA46D550 or be a man and get PS51D550 51" FHD plasma (about R1,500 more than 46" LCD). :D

PS51D550! Come on PP, can't believe that you of all people would get it wrong :p you also forgot to mention that it's 3D.

*rubs sleep out of eyes*

*goes to make kawfee*

Sorry, sincere apologies. :D

At least it would seem we agree... ;)

Just to keep things evenly biased.... ;)

Stay away from Samsung, their new entry level plasma screens are complete dirt. Have seen a few (and owned one) of the 43" and 51" and they have terrible reflection problems.

Forget about Samsung and get Sony.

I would not recommend plasma either as it has image retention which can be a problem with PC use and heavy gaming.

Go Sony 46EX500 or be a man and get a 46EX500 46" FHD LCD (about R0 more than a 46" LCD).

I agree, go Sony. I have one and not a single issue :) But I do also like Samsung!! LOL

Nah i'm not biased. It was just the best that I could get in my price range. I'm not saying Samsung make the best tv's in the world ( i wouldn't know that) but it suited my needs and requirements at the time.

yes reflections can be a problem but i've not had any issues with image retention.

Entry level plasma's have always been reflective. Don't take out your poor room design on poor old entry plasma... :D

Truth is most people used to have CRT TVs in the same spot, which are more reflective than plasma. Most people are fine with it, some are just anal, fair enough.

Image retention isn't a problem, and is very seldom. If you game 8 hours a day with no cut scenes/cinematics/changing to other sources then yes image retention might be cause for concern.

46EX500 is decent, but probably quite pricey due to 100Hz.

Hehe :) My room isn't that bright... I used to have a 74cm CRT, and it did have reflections... but the TV was small, so it wasn't so distracting. On a 46" or 51" screen, it was much more of an issue for me.

And watching sport during the day, without having to close all the blinds is great on the LCD with a very matte screen :)

The 46EX500 goes for R9999. But I don't think they are readily available anymore, as they are actually a 2010 model :(

Indeed. Like Samsung, seems Sony have dropped their mid range 100Hz CCFL backlit LCDs. :(

So let's say I have only 8grand to spend.

I'm surprised a person would need a 10grand Sony to compete with an 8grand Samsung. Granted it is slightly larger but still.

±R7,999 Samsung LA46D550
±R8,999 Sony KDL-46CX520 (test in store for any backlight issues, the TV must be bright)

I recommend you check out 51" plasma as well. If reflection isn't an issue, it will offer superior picture quality

±R5,999 Samsung PS51D450 HD Ready
±R9,999 Samsung PS51D550 FHD

Test at a proper AV shop or at least one with a testing room, away from bright shop lighting and isle-viewing distances. Use proper settings and not the store-mode AKA Torch mode settings. You may be surprised with the 51" HD Ready plasma... ;)
