I got my line upgraded to VDSL about 2 months ago and it's been pretty awesome. The biggest problem is that in games my ping keeps spiking quite badly and generally inconsistent performance.

After looking at my router I've noticed I'm getting a metric ton of CRC errors which I suspect is leading to dropped packets. My router allows me to manually apply VDSL stability control and after messing with it I find even with it cranked max (to the point where I get sync rate of 5mb) I can't get rid of these errors, the weird part is that it never used to happen with my 10mb line. Is this something I should phone telkom about or is this my line telling me it can't do vdsl?

My router stats:

DSL Link Status up
DSL Uptime 0 days 5 hours 49 minutes 4 seconds
DSL modulation ITU G.993.2(VDSL2)
Annex mode ANNEX_B
SNR Down 14.0 dB
SNR Up 16.1 dB
Line Attenuation Down 21.9 dB
Line Attenuation Up 63.1 dB
Path Mode Interleaved
Data Rate Down 20199 kbps
Data Rate Up 2048 kbps
MAX Rate Down 25900
MAX Rate Up 8224
POWER Down 11.7 dbm
POWER Up 4.8 dbm
CRC Down 15588
CRC Up 0

Hi,

I have the same on my 10MB ADSL line. Also have a few upload CRC's as well.

Telkom say there is nothing they can do about it.

Just for an update. I tried disabling all my stability control measures to see what my base crc error count was. For whatever reason it's magically fixed itself:

DSL Uptime 0 days 22 hours 27 minutes 59 seconds
DSL modulation ITU G.993.2(VDSL2)
Annex mode ANNEX_B
SNR Down 8.8 dB
SNR Up 16.1 dB
Line Attenuation Down 21.9 dB
Line Attenuation Up 63.1 dB
Path Mode Interleaved
Data Rate Down 20478 kbps
Data Rate Up 2048 kbps
MAX Rate Down 38852
MAX Rate Up 8202
POWER Down 12.0 dbm
POWER Up 4.9 dbm
CRC Down 170
CRC Up 0

Don't know what to tell you. Maybe my routers stability control was causing the crc issue?

So what is the beef in regards to CRC errors?

Since the beginning of August our internet has had intermittent fluctuations and resets. We called out Telkom and the guy could not find any issues on our side in regards to noise problems. The Openserve Technician even went up the pole and redid the connection there. We have a solid outdoor cable running straight from the pole through the roof into my office, no joins whatsoever.
I am of the opinion the problem does not lie on my side.

Anyway, the day before the technician arrived to check our line, a Telkom guy called me to check our line and confirmed that there was noise on the line and reset my port, also enabling Fastpath for download. I did several tests after this reset and the speedtest was solid to any ISP I chose. It did not fluctuate, the needle went up and stayed at full download potential during all the tests. Brilliant, I thought my problems were over.....
Well by the next day, I assume ASSIA reset my line again, Fastpath was gone and interleave depth set at 32 as you can see in the screenshot.

Most of the time there are no CRC errors and then when it starts it gets worse and worse and then I think ASSIA resets the port again and the CRC errors go back to zero until the next incident which could be hours later or the next day.

I have had ADSL forever. Basically we are a stone throw away from the exchange, never had any real issues that could not be sorted, until August 2018. Since the beginning of this month the internet is not what it should be.

So what happened the day the Telkom guy called, set my line up to Fastpath and everything was beautiful for a day.

My aim is to have been put on VDSL but the maximum here at our pole is 20Mb ADSL2+.

Edit: The Asus Router itself has flashed an exclamation mark several times now since the beginning of August and I filled in the feedback form and got an answer from them immediately. Wow Asus, thats good work.
Anyway, they told me to set up the following settings on the router based on the 24 hour diagnostic test done.

"Please go to DSL Setting and set "Dynamic Line Adjustment (DLA)" to
Disabled, and set ADSL Settings > ESNP - Enhanced Sudden Noise
Protection to Stable(please note that for VDSL also there is same
setting available, please set ADSL one). Also set Stability
Adjustment(ADSL) to -2dB and capture another 24 hours debug logs

"
