Wow, England's chase was good, @ 112 - 5 I gave them no chance of coming close to 300 at all, so in the end to lose by 7 runs, is amazing.

London - The saga of Kevin Pietersen's extraordinary exit from the international arena took a fresh twist Friday when the England and Wales Cricket Board and its managing director, Paul Downton, apologised for criticism of the batsman made by the former England wicketkeeper.

Downton appeared on BBC Radio's Test Match Special programme on May 22 and during the course of a wide-ranging interview went into details about England's controversial decision to ditch former captain Pietersen following the team's 5-0 Ashes series loss in Australia.

ECB chief Downton said the 33-year-old appeared "disinterested" and "distracted" in the fifth Test in Sydney, and added he was unable to find anyone within the England squad who wanted South Africa-born Pietersen to remain in the team.

An angry Pietersen responded by labelling Downton's remarks "wholly untrue".

And having gone to the trouble of negotiating an exit with Pietersen, the ECB was embarrassingly forced to admit that some of Downton's comments were "in breach of the settlement agreement" made with the batsman when his England central contract was terminated.

"On May 22 during an interview on BBC Test Match Special, Paul Downton of the ECB made a series of comments about Kevin Pietersen with which Kevin takes issue, including the comments he made regarding his perception of Kevin's attitude during the Sydney Test on last winter's Ashes tour," said an ECB statement issued late Friday.

"Some of those comments were made in breach of a settlement agreement between the ECB and Kevin Pietersen which was concluded at the time Kevin's central contract was terminated earlier this year.

"Paul Downton and the ECB both apologise to Kevin Pietersen for those comments made that were in breach of the settlement agreement and have confirmed that they will abide by its terms moving forward."

Slow starts? Nah. New Zealand like to play for a draw from the opening over. It usually bores the opposition to death, tears and frustration.
 
Lunch Day 2 - NZ 299/5 (122.0 ov) and Ian Bishop and Danny Morrison said 450+, maybe 500 I doubt it.

Can wait for the West Indies to bat, perhaps things will be more interesting.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl, Angelo Mathews has rolled the dice, he wants to make use of the juice in this emerald surface. Alastair Cook doesn't look too perturbed to have lost... Anyway, Plunkett's return is confirmed and SL have gone with Dimuth Karunaratne at opener and the two Nuwans, Kulasekara and Pradeep, in the attack, so no Prasad.
 
Pradeep to Robson, OUT, full again, draws the stroke and got him! Prasanna doesn't drop this one, silence echoes around Lord's as Robson's debut innings comes to a swift end... Decent delivery from Pradeep, just held its line on the slope from the Nursery End, was wide enough to leave, though. Good diving take from PJ, by the way, no clash of cymbals this time

Both the Nuwan's in this game have gotten early starts as Kulasekara gets the big one:

Kulasekara to Cook, OUT, chopped on, Cook has done for himself! Wasn't quite wide enough to cut, maybe didn't swing as much as some of Kulasekara's deliveries this morning, the batsman got a little cramped and the ball cannoned down into the stumps. Sri Lanka are whooping it up, they have both openers in the hutch and Lord's is a basket of nerves...

Eranga to Bell, OUT, full and angled in, strikes the pad and a huge cry for lbw, not out given but Sri Lanka don't hesitate too much before reviewing. No bat involved, it looks close, is it too high? No it isn't, Hawk Eye has the delivery going on to take the top of middle stump, a very good review and they've taken a big wicket, England checked yet again

Good decision by the on-field umpire although it was overturned on review... Bell was falling over to off trying to play a shot through mid-wicket and the very bottom edge of his bat clipped his pad. This made a nicking sound that influenced the umpire to give it not out. Real time it was a sound call. Hot spot and ultra-slow-mo proved otherwise! I would not want to umpire today!!!!
 
Despite periodically picking up wickets, England are maintaining a decent run rate -- just over 4 rpo at the moment.

The pressure to get the decisions right is immense. It doesn't help that every decision is tested by dozens of different camera angles. So, 100% agreed. Only the best survive at this level.
 
Good recovery by England, to get to the overnight score. Wonder what tomorrow will hold.

The West Indies are poor, I hope they find something to work with before they come here at the end of the year.

Edit: I was also wrong about NZ getting 500 :whistle:

I really hope that the Sri Lankans don't collapse when they are put in to chase. Match situation very interesting. Nicely poised.
 
It seems like England are not going to get enough time to set up a competitive total.
 
Sri Lanka has to see off the first session without losing 2-3 wickets....
