Cricket: International Discussion Thread

And the umpires have signalled lunch as Mushfiqur heads back to the dressing room. Sri Lanka have throughly enjoyed the morning session, picking up five wickets which has for all accounts taken Bangladesh out of the match. 150 for 6, when you need to eliminate a deficit of 498, gives you an indicator of where this match is heading. Can Bangladesh survive through to tea? Those answers and more in 40 minutes' time.

SL in complete control and BAN capitulating something horrible...

Innings and 248 run snotklap dished out by the lads from SL:

So as it stands Sri Lanka lead the two-match Test series 1-0. Bangladesh can not be counted out as they are playing at home and will surely be imbibing many of the lessons that they will need to take from this match. So till that second Test in Chittagong on February 4, this is Rohan Sharma signing off for ESPNcricinfo on behalf of the scorer, Gopi R.

Mahela Jayawardene, Man of the Match: It has been some time since I got a big one. I thought it was a great game by the team as everyone put their hand up and performed, so it was a good outing. I think the wicket played really well, and even today there was a little bit of pace for our quicks, and for the spinners it was spinning, but the important thing was the bounce which really helped us. Overall, a good Test wicket. It is all about handling situations, that is where our guys did well. We applied ourselves and made sure not to lose our wickets up front. There were times where their spinners bowled well, but we were able to handle the situation well and pull through in the end.

Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka captain: It was a complete performance by the team. Everyone played their part. Pretty happy with the way the boys went out today. The bowlers have been brilliant for us in the past few games, and we knew if the fast bowlers were bowling well then the spinners would do well after. Perera has played two games and has been brilliant, one with the bat, and one with the ball, so he has been a great find for us. We hope he can keep on contributing. I'm a bit disappointed (in missing out on a ton), but congratulations to Vithanage and Mahela for their scores. It was unfortunate for Prasanna to fly back, but Chandimal responded brilliantly. We would like to keep playing positive cricket and keep winning.

Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh captain: It was a good wicket to bat on but we didn't play well from day one and we were on the back foot. It is very difficult to come back from that, but I still thought the pitch was good to bat on, but the boys just didn't show the fight in the middle. Hopefully we come back strong in the next Test. It has been great for us in the last two and a half years, we just didn't deliver in this Test. We need to work on our batting and hopefully we can come back strong in Chittagong. It is important now that someone from the top plays a big innings, as it gives us a lot of chance in the middle. We hope the boys at top come strong, and as a batting unit we need to put our hand up.

A bit of overkill by SL I'd say. Smith would've declared at 400

Overkill? Yes, but only to allow Mahela and Vithanage to get their milestones. Important for both. Maiden century for Vithanage and a double for Mahela (his 7th). Plenty of time in the game. Bangladesh were never going to play out 2 and bit days. All favoured SL taking their time.

Thank you, Squire.

New Zealand 303/5 (50 ov)
India 216/10 (49.4 ov)

New Zealand won by 87 runs

NZ take the 5 match series 4-0. Comprehensively beaten again.

:D

Should have been a whitewash.

Damn Indians really have been outfoxed by the Kiwis.

4-0 series win was it not?

Haha... India are not looking so great away from home... They really do struggle away from low and slow.

The so-called Big 3 are starting to looking like the Big 1 (Australia) at the moment, and even then Australia has been playing against a woeful England so who knows how good Aus really are.

India getting hammered in the first test against NZ.

329/4 at stumps

McCullum and Williamson both have scored centuries.

/starts feeling nervous /

Have tickets for Day 3 of Newlands test - hope I'm not going to be depressed there

You should see a good day of cricket.. Its unlikely SA will win inside 3 days :)

5.20pm What a finish. Catch your collective breaths everybody. This has been another epic Test match. New Zealand go on what seems like a lap of honour. How relieved he will be after they messed it up yesterday

Let's listen to Wagner: "Awesome. I am absolutely out of breath, to be honest. Amazing feeling. One of the best of my career. Honoured to be part of this. Plan was to be patient and execute well for long period of times. Boys always kept fighting. Kept running in. We all fought hard. The Dhawan wicket was crucial. Then with Boulty with the second new ball. He always does that. Timmy and Trent, a lot of credit to them. A lot of guys - a lot of Indians shouting stuff at me - so wanted to show how much it means [when he did a chest puff after taking the fourth wicket]"

5.25pm Still coming to terms with what a great Test we have had. Just for that we need to thank McCullum for not enforcing the follow-on. What a spirited fight from India, though. They nearly became the first team ever to win a Test after conceding 300 deficit, Tests that ended naturally I mean

5.30pm This is an evening when you finish your work, grab a cold one, sit by the pitch, and look around and quietly thank the surroundings for providing us a great Test. The two teams too. Umpires, maybe. No need to talk to anybody for an hour at least

...

5.40pm The captains have spoken, the Man of the Match has spoken, we will talk for weeks, this has been a great Test thanks to these two spirited sides. Thanks for joining us for this great Test. We will see you soon. On the 14th. Basin Reserve it will be. This is Sidharth Monga signing off

"Definitely nervous times," Brendon McCullum, who is also the Man of the Match, says. "That run chase. They put us under immense amount of pressure. Neil Wagner's spell today epitomised everything that is going well with the side. A great Test to be part of. One that we will remember. We had to overcome tough periods when batting. Managed partnerships. Got a big score, above par.

"After not enforcing the follow-on, we didn't play well, but their bowling was exceptional too. Would have loved to have a few more in the bank. One of those ones. Everyone has got their own opinion. You have to make that decision. You live and die by that decision. Thankfully we are living by it. You take all inputs from the bowlers, and then make the decision. At 220 for 3 it wasn't looking that great, but we showed enough fight.

"Neil is brilliant. He never wants an opportunity to pass him by. His role is to bowl a lot of overs, and hostile overs. Gives Tim and Trent opportunity to attack. He has thoroughly deserved his wickets. He has turned this game.

"One of my best innings in an NZ shirt. Delighted to make a significant contribution. A lot of credit must go to those who formed partnerships with me. A Test victory over this Indian team is no small achievement."

"The bowlers bowled fantastically well to get us back," says MS Dhoni "I don;t think we batted really well in the first innings. Second innings, quiet a few of our batmen batted really well. One of the best that I have seen our bowlers bowl. Especially on a good wicket. They kept it tight, bowled wicket-taking deliveries at the same time. They need to continue doing that. When you go and not look at what you want to achieve at the end, you can slowly graduate into bigger goals. A few unlucky wickets. Ajinkya's decision was a tough one at a very crucial time."

Another big win for the Black Caps. Well done, fellas :)

Awesome, I hope India loses everything they play. England is already there. Only thing left is for us to pummel the sheep shaggers.
