India vs NZ, second test. NZ won the toss and chose to bat. Currently 201/5. Let it slip in the last few overs. They were well placed at 197/3. Some work to do consolidate.

Pakistan vs England, second test. England won the toss and chose to bat. Currently 180/6. Bit of a mini collapse from 70/1 to 118/6 but Smith and Atkinson are stitching a handy partnership together.
 
Horrible morning session for India, losing 6 wickets for just 57. Currently on 107/7, still trailing NZ by 152.

Pakistan have done well after that collapse in the first game.

Yeah, India on the verge of a home series defeat. Wonder when last that happened. It will take an epic batting performance to stave that off.

Definite kudos to Pakistan on their fightback. England in all sorts of trouble at the close.
 
India losing a home series helps our test championship final hopes. Currently the most likely three is us,aus and India.
 
England 29/9 effectively...it's quite fun watching spinners work when we're not on the receiving end.

Something (obvious) that's different about seam-friendly conditions versus a spinning pitch...it never gets easier against spin. A green pitch loses moisture and flattens out, the ball gets older and stops seaming / swinging for 50-60 overs before it gets replaced but spin just gets harder as time goes on. Two spinners can bowl an entire session no problem...there's just nowhere to hide.

Must suck sitting in the change room waiting for your turn to get suffocated.
 
Mitch Santner's best bowling in an innings before this match was 3/34 and he averages 42 overall...now he's got 12 at 10 runs apiece.

I want to say serves India right for preparing sandpits but it's not that tough a pitch compared to the ones that made Elgar unplayable. So what's going on?

I just don't think India applied themselves adequately when batting. Look at how the likes of Kohli and Pant got out. They tried to hit themselves out of trouble and it backfired spectacularly. NZ showed that with some application, runs are there to be had.

Yeah, I think so. I think they've picked a team to play like England want to....Rohit, Gil, Jaiswal, Pant all want to get on with it and there's no Dravid / Pujara type in the team at all anymore.

Going to be an interesting time for them rebuilding after Rohit and Kohli hang it up.

I doudt we will see many or any of those types of batsmen anymore. That type of batsmen don't get the league gigs which most cricketers need to make a great living. Most will now look to develop their game around T20 cricket.

I guess it's a balance thing and it will evolve again...teams that bounce between getting 500 in no time and 150 all out will have to rethink things if that is costing them games. England won that first test by breaking the Pakistanis with that crazy batting display. The Pakis were shell-shocked and got bowled out on a flat pitch that had just given up 800 runs in 5 sessions (and they'd themselves made 550 on).

But then England's approach failed over the next two games (the changed Pakistani bowling line-up contributed a lot). If Joe Root doesn't bat a long time and give the others stability, they don't look good. So something needs to be tweaked somewhere even if it's the existing line-up being more willing to bat in different gears (Stokes has done that before).

A late mini collapse (including Kohli being run out) has left India 86/4 at the close of play on Day 1. They were well placed at 78/1 in reply to NZ's 235 but a double wicket maiden and the run out of Kohli has left them teetering.
