Cricket: International Discussion Thread

Interesting incident in the India vs New Zealand test: penalty runs being awarded to the fielding side as a result of the batsman repeatedly running on the protected area of the pitch. Usually penalty runs are awarded to the batting side (and usually due to the ball striking a fielder's helmet placed behind the stumps -- other occurrences are extremely rare indeed); I've never seen the fielding team being awarded penalty runs before.

The applicable law (42.14) is as follows:

14. Batsman damaging the pitch

(a) If either batsman causes avoidable damage to the pitch, at the first instance the umpire seeing the contravention shall, when the ball is dead, inform the other umpire of the occurrence. The bowler’s end umpire shall then

(i) warn both batsmen that the practice is unfair and indicate that this is a first and final warning. This warning shall apply throughout the innings. The umpire shall so inform each incoming batsman.

(ii) inform the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred.

(b) If there is any further instance of avoidable damage to the pitch by any batsman in that innings, the umpire seeing the contravention shall, when the ball is dead, inform the other umpire of the occurrence. The bowler’s end umpire shall then

(i) disallow all runs to the batting side from that delivery other than the penalty for a No ball or a Wide, if applicable.

(ii) additionally, award 5 penalty runs to the fielding side.

(iii) return the batsmen to their original ends.

(iv) inform the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred.

(c) The umpires together shall report the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the batting side and to any Governing Body for the match who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain and player or players concerned.

India vs New Zealand, 3rd Test: Ravindra Jadeja pays the penalty

Ravindra Jadeja was fined 50 per cent of his match fee and also received three demerit points for infringing the protected area on the pitch.

Spinner running on the pitch...am sure it was completely accidental.

First test between Pakistan and the West Indies starts at 13:30 (SA time) and it should be interesting to watch as it's a pink ball test.

^, must be else there's no point using a pink ball.

edit: checked on cricinfo...20:30 the last session starts.

Pakistan 421/2 (124.6 ov)
West Indies
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat

The Windies have no real answers in their bowling line up at the mo ... that or the pitch is a road.

Probably the latter. Scores have always been high there, seldom with a result. Watched a bit of the Windies reply and they looked very comfortable. Assuming they apply themselves, I can't see this match being any different.

I watched most of the third session on day one. Considering that it was night and pink ball, the lack of swing and movement of the seam was quite sad. It gives all advantage to the batting. Like you say, if the Windies apply themselves, the result is almost certainly a draw.

Match delicately poised. West Indies need 159 runs in a minimum of 51 overs with 6 wickets in hand. Tense times...

England 522/9 (155.1 ov)
India
England won the toss and elected to bat

England batting their way toward a draw. If they had given this match situation any thought, the fall of Stokes (the 9th wicket) should have brought on a declaration. They can only win this if the knock India over twice. India at home aren't going to fold twice in 3 days.

come now.

its a game in india. we all know they only last 3 days.

sure england batted for 2 of them, but the pitch is going to deteriorate to a point where batting is impossible.

winning the toss and batting first means winning the game in india.

hopefully this is exactly the case in this game so india can get a taste of their own medicine

"Good morning Alan, I hope you're well. What, of the three centuries, do you feel was the best?" Morning to you, too, Alastair. Got to be Root, hasn't it? Setting the tone when the innings was in its infancy. Moeen was impressive, too, but Stokes had more lives than a moggy on a minefield.

Interesting terminology ^

England 537
India 63/0 (23.0 ov)
India trail by 474 runs with 10 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

Stumps day 2 and the match is starting to drift a little?
