CRICKET: SA v India

Smith went off cos there were no floodlights...no points throwing wickets away. No one to blame except the weather. IMO Durban isn't such a great test venue anymore. Light situation is happening when Aus and England were here.

Omac as much as u hate Smith, I dont think there's another captain that can lead SA atm. Smith has had bad form recently and is arrogant but he's a decent captain. We have bowlers who don't bowl in the in the right places and you can't blame Smith for that. We have batsmen who can't score runs if schoolboys bowled to them. Kallis or Boucher isn't good enough. Only other captain I can think of is Mckenzie but he's not even in the team. I'm not saying Smith is a great captain but honestly he's all SA can afford to lead the team.

IMO two names for you - Mark Boucher - Ashwell Prince.

Either will do a far better job. Smith is an idiot.

derekc not really, I think Pollock could do a better job. We should make full use of him before he retires. Even Prince, Boucher or Kallis could do a better job.

The only reason Pollock was dropped as captain was because of a world cup blunder. How many blunders has Smith made?

Don't totally agree, Mark Boucher also had this dip in his career, got to arrogant and too secure of his position. They gave him the boot and he came back better then before. Realizing that no one can be guaranteed his place in the team.

Maybe Smith also got that idea and know ,game after game he can preform badly, SA Cricket can't afford to lose him.

Send him back to his prov team and let him sort things out.

Boucher, AB can take over the captaincy.

I also wonder what Bouch has done wrong? I seem to remember him being at the forefront of telling a few youngsters to tell the truth and save their careers in the Hansiegate episode. I wonder!

@DereckC - Just for info, my opinion of smith has remained the same since the day he was appointed. He has proved me right time and again. I said at the time that he would be an embarrasment and this is true. The first thing he did was use his position to embarress Lance Klusener, a team mate, in public. He went on to insult some of the best international captains in the press conferances, so much so that they have no respect for him. (Yes their respect is required if they are to meet as equals on the field) On many other occasions he has proved me right!

The irony of the situation is that I always said he had ability with the bat. Hmmm, go figure!

Smith is an arrogant bastard yes...but he's teammates has admitted (think this was a year ago) that the way he captains his team has lifted the team. As I said, put Smith in the Aus squad where you have talent you can captain, nobody would be complaining. He's a bit dumb on the insulting etc but what's important is that he does lift his team. Look at the wanderers test. Ppl said he's captaining wasn't too great there but when ur bowlers bowl in the wrong places, what can you do. You can set the best possible field and nothing could be fixed.

I've seen Prince, Kallis and Bouch captain. They know how to set the standard fields but sometimes a good captain needs more than that like know when to attack. Pollock even before WC always played the convencitonal cricket, set the conventional field and that's it. smith deserves to get dropped for his form but not for his captaincy. We've had really crap players coming through the ranks...I don't think Fleming (IMO the best captain there is atm) or Ponting could do much with what we have. It's the system that's at fault. Why did Ray Jennings get fired when he managed to pull the team together etc...? too many politics involved. Leave the team to concentrate on the game and it's all good.

Well an average of 47 in test matches still says he's a decent batsmen. Look at Mathew Hayden...he was in the slump for so long but Aus kept on playing him and it's bearing fruit...think the whole SA team just need time playing domestic series and not be rested for them.

I'm not a Smith fan..... But honestly dude, he is quite a good batsman going through a **** time. Jacques Kallis, who many consider to be one of the greatest of all time, fared **** for the better part of 3 years. So, while you obviously hate the guy for whatever reason (maybe cos he got with Minki....), he is a damn good cricketer. Probably not the best man to be the captain, but honestly, who would you pick in his stead as the captain? BTW, remember, captains tend to give up on their own performance.

IMO, the powers that be were looking for another Hansie when appointing smith. They saw the arrogance as aggresiveness and started rubbing their hands together. A Hansie temprament in a youngster they could control. Yay they said. Big mistake. 2nd press conferance and he cocked it up.

His team mates have to say nice stuff about him in public. It's part of being in the team. Say something against the golden boy and you career is shortened.

Anyway, we can debate it forever. I think he is poor for the team, poor for the country and an international embarrasment. And the evidence is there for all to see.

The way he is booed around the country is embarrassing and the powers should wake up and smell the coffee and fire his *rse.

I would say boucher. :D

If all the top order bring their side, we dont need to rely on boucher for batting. Dont think is wicketkeeping would suffer.

Actually my opinion is that Boucher is not the best man for the keeper job anymore.

I'm still for smithy as captain. I was from day 1, and see no reason why it should be changed. (i'm not going to blabber on now about reasoning)

kallis would never, ever be my captain - hes a straight up and down type guy with no variation, and thats how he would captain.

Bouch would crumble after a little Aussie pressure (talking tests here).. so he would also be unsuitable.

Yeah - there are a few players who succumbed to Aussie chirping in the past, and Bouch is one of them (Cullinan another noteworthy player who suffered against the Aussies)

I reckon smith should stay as captain, why? cause after the last few yrs i reckon he is coming right but the problem right now is he is performing badly upfront along with a few others that should be more consistent. And in the end that is what differs from Sa to Aus squad.

we stick with players even when they suck which i think is wrong. In the beginning we use to do the same for bowlers too, but nowadays we have more to choose from and swop the 3rd + 4th as needed heck nel came thru like that now is replacing pollock up front(and he is getting better with the bat too :P), that needs to be done in SA with batsman esp when they struggling. I mean it presents the perfect opportunity to bring in peaking national players but again it sucks when e.g your experienced players leave faster than the new comers.

So its a catch 20 situation, drop smith lower in order could work but with gibbs also down the order who will be the temp opener? btw why is dippenaar not in the test? I mean he'd be perfect to add some stability, sure he is slow but thats what u need upfront to wear the red ball slightly

Smith is the man! Stop whining and accept it. He will grow to become the best ever.

As your name states, NEWSFLASH!!!! Smith has received a lot of criticism the last couple of weeks. I mean, have you ever seen the guy score more than 10 runs in the past few ODI's against India?

I have nothing against him, but he's not a captain. They shouldn't sack him from the team, but at least remove him from being team captain.

In my opinion he can stay on as captain, just let him get his form back at prov level. Not messing up the Proteas batting line up.

Thats what everyone said when he was appointed. "Give him time" they said. "He's young." "He'll grow into it" they said.

And still monkey boy can't get it right. Fck him. Fire his *rse.

"best ever." hurrmmph. BS

And you stop whining about people calling for his head to roll! :p

Is that so? Smith was the most prolific run scorer of a South African/England test series ever - and this one in his first overseas test series ever. Whatever dude. Don't let the facts get in your way. I ain't a Smith fan, but clearly you're bordering on obsessive hatred of the guy.

Smith's Record:

Class___Mt____Inn____N/O____Runs____HS_____AVG______100s___50s
Tests___49____86_____5______3906____277____48.22____11_____14
ODIs____99____98_____5______3540____134*___38.06____6______20
20/20___4_____4______1______188_____89*____62.66____0______2
1st Cl__84____146____10_____6735____311____49.52____19_____23

Quite a good record I'd say. Even including his current slump.

Face it. He's a crp captain.

Clearly you don't read before you post!

@JontyB - well put! I must admit I'm also not a "Smith" fan at the mo, but I like it when people present FACTS to support their point of view. ;)
As you say, his stats INCLUDES the current 'poor' form and he still has such a good average!
