Betway SA20 U19 Women’s camp hailed a success

Four-day camp upskills future stars to help broaden women’s cricket depth in SA​

Friday, 10 November 2023: Betway SA20’s commitment to improve all aspects of the game in South Africa shattered new ceilings this past weekend with the inaugural Betway SA20 U19 Women’s camp held in Tshwane. The camp, in collaboration with Cricket South Africa, is a mentoring project designed to upskill and support emerging women’s cricket talent in South Africa.

Twenty-six young players were hand-picked to receive professional and mental conditioning coaching from some of the country’s top coaches, including Women’s National Academy head coach Dinesha Devnarain and Australian legend and double ICC Women’s World Cup winner, Julia Price.

The first camp, held at the Cricket South Africa Centre of Excellence, was an overwhelming success with the second intake scheduled for March 2024.

Betway SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith, believes the camps are a significant strategic attempt to accelerate the growth of women’s cricket in South Africa in its bid to launch a first-ever Women’s Betway SA20 in the near future.

“Off the back of the success of the first season of Betway SA20, the long-term vision is to launch a fully-fledged women’s event in the future,” Smith explained. “It was an exceptional year for women’s cricket, with the first-ever Women’s U19 World Cup here in South Africa, the Proteas Women reaching the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and the start of the CSA Professional Domestic Women’s League. We felt we wanted to target this under-19 group to upskill them so that when we launch a women’s League in a few years we have top class local talent to supplement the international players. We received great feedback from the players and coaches alike and can’t wait for the next camp planned for next year.”

Price, who is no stranger to South Africa, shared Smith’s enthusiasm and was equally excited about the talent on display over the four days.

“It’s really exciting to see what’s coming up in the future of South African women’s cricket. I was lucky enough to be at the first-ever Women’s Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, so I got a little bit of an insight into what’s happening here in South Africa,” Price said.

“The fact that they’ve got this talent camp happening is allowing the girls to really show their skill sets. To have a group of past players, male and female, coaching them and being able to be seen in this pathway allows them to aspire to be whatever they want to be in the future.”

South Africa U19 wicketkeeper/batter, Karabo Meso, was one the stars of the ICC U19 World Cup on home soil earlier this year, and now having benefited from being exposed to high-quality coaching from the camp, the 16-year-old is thrilled about all the potential opportunities in the future.

“It’s a great opportunity to learn from some of the best local and international coaches,” Meso said. “Learning from South Africans and Australians is a good combination, you are able to get the best of both worlds. If we were to have a Women’s T20 League it would help to promote women’s cricket and it would be a great opportunity for us youngsters coming up and something exciting to work towards.”
 
Every now and then, I see scorecards of women's teams getting bowled out for less than 30, lol.

I assume the members of these teams were probably introduced to cricket a year or two ago?
 

Laura Wolvaardt confirmed as full-time Proteas Women captain​


Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday confirmed that Laura Wolvaardt will be the permanent captain of the Proteas Women in all three formats of the game.

Wolvaardt takes over the reins full-time after a successful tenure as interim captain during the recent tours against Pakistan and New Zealand. She led from the front with the bat, helping her team to back-to-back 2-1 ODI series victories.

Wolvaardt, 24, took over from Sune Luus, who captained the SA women during the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Luus had stepped in for former skipper Dane van Niekerk, who struggled for form and fitness and subsequently retired.

WOLVAARDT APPOINTED PROTEAS WOMEN CAPTAIN AS CSA NAMES T20I SQUAD FOR BANGLADESH TOUR

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) has today announced the official appointment of Laura Wolvaardt as captain of the Proteas Women for all three formats along with the 15-player T20 International (T20I) squad set to face Bangladesh in the white ball tour on home soil between 03 - 23 December.

Wolvaardt takes over the reins full-time after a successful tenure as interim captain during the recent tours against Pakistan and New Zealand where she led from the front with the bat, helping her team to back-to-back 2-1 ODI series victories.

At the age of 24, Wolvaardt has already appeared in 86 One-Day Internationals (ODI) and 59 T20Is, recording 3,421 runs with 30 fifties and four hundreds in the 50-over format, in addition to 1,313 runs at an average of 32.82 with nine half-centuries in T20Is.

In the T20I series between 03 - 08 December, the newly appointed South African captain will oversee a squad blended wih youth and know-how, with a sprinkle of rising talent as SA U19 and SA Emerging stars Ayanda Hlubi and Eliz-Mari Marx earn their maiden international call-ups in the shorter format.

Returning to the national fold for the first time since injuring her hand during the winter is Six Gun Grill Garden Route Badgers all-rounder Annerie Dercksen, who gets a reward for solid performances at domestic and Emerging level at the start of the new season.

Among the centrally contracted players not available for the T20I series are fast bowler Ayabonga Khaka (knee injury) and all-rounders Chloè Tryon (groin) and Nadine de Klerk (side strain). Meanwhile, experienced campaigner Marizanne Kapp is rested for the T20Is and will return for the crucial ODI series.

The Proteas Women squad that will compete in the three-match One-Day series will be announced ahead of the 50-over encounters which are being held in East London, Potchefstroom and Benoni between 16 - 23 December. The ODI matches form part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 (IWC) in pursuit of qualification for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

“A few of our senior players are not available for the T20-leg of the Bangladesh Tour due to injury and those returning from the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). This allows us to have an indepth look at players for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup taking place next year in Bangladesh.

“The inclusion of Ayanda Hlubi and Eliz-Mari Marx gives great confidence to rewarding performances at the professional level. They have been instrumental with their domestic performances in the past season for their respective provinces,”

Proteas Women head coach, Hilton Moreeng said:

“From our perspective, it is about continuing the good work that has been done. We know we are playing against Bangladesh who just came off a very successful tour against Pakistan.

“For the T20Is, this is where we are going to look, where possible, to blend in youngsters and give an opportunity to expose them at this level to keep growing the base. Overall, we have a lot of good youngsters coming through and the squad is becoming stronger and stronger every day with a more challenging environment, so we as a team are looking forward to that.

“It’s another opportunity for some of these youngsters to show what they can do while not losing sight of what we want to achieve overall when it comes to the entire tour,” the head coach concluded.
