Cricket world cup discussion thread

This is going to be an awesome tournament ... hopefully we will get to watch some brilliant cricket ...
Yes!! Thank goodness the days of Oz-domination have ended!

Currently I reckon England have the strongest team in the world, followed by South Africa, then India. India have tremendous depth, particularly with all their batsmen and spinners. It's their lack of seam bowlers that seems to be their weakness. That said India are playing at home, with home conditions.

So many good teams, predicting the winner is almost impossible. However, my guess is a Pak-Eng final, with England to get the cup.

Much has been spoken about tahir, and his wicket-taking ability, he has unfortunately not proven himself at international level. Sub-continent teams are fed a diet of spin bowling from a young age, I just wonder if he really is going to provide the X-factor SA has been lacking to win a world cup. That said if he does prove to be a positive influence in our team and helps bring back the trophy, I guess he can be adopted as one of our own :)

There are quite a few non subcontinental teams in the competition. Also only india really have a rep for destroying spinners...Foreign spinners have had success vs sri lanka, pakistan and bangladesh.

Why are we in such a crappy group? We would be top of group A

The draw was made according to the icc rankings. Topping the group isn't as important as in the last three world cups. The have done away with the super 8 phase and gone back to the straight knock out phase of quarter finals -> semi finals -> final.

So basicly its get through the group and then play 3 great games.

Australia will risk both Brett Lee and Shaun Tait at the World Cup after they were chosen in the 15-man squad for the trophy defence beginning in India next month. Peter Siddle and Xavier Doherty were not included while John Hastings, the Victoria allrounder, was named along with the injured duo of Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey.

Hussey picked up a serious hamstring tear in Sunday's ODI win over England, while Ponting is recovering from surgery to his little finger. The pair will not appear in the remainder of the one-day series, with the other 13 members of the World Cup squad selected to finish the seven-match campaign.

Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, did admit some doubt over Hussey getting to the World Cup. "It is a severe injury and we will make a decision closer to departure date," he said.

Hussey and Ponting do have plenty of time to recover before the tournament reaches the knockout stages, with the quarter finals beginning on March 23. Australia's opening match of the campaign is against Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on February 21.

While Australia are now mid-table in Tests, they remain the No.1 side in the 50-over game and are aiming for their fourth consecutive World Cup win. Seven players who were part of the unbeaten 2007 success in the West Indies will attempt to achieve more glory.

Lee and Tait are returning from long-term elbow injuries but the selectors have kept faith in their speed, bodies and shock value. Lee, 34, captured two wickets on Sunday in his first ODI since October 2009 as he reached 150kph, while Tait missed the game with a back injury. Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger are the other quicks in the unit, with Hastings and Shane Watson enlisted to provide support.

"Hastings has been selected as he adds variety to our bowling options," Hilditch said. "We feel his bowling is well suited to subcontinent conditions and his all-round skills with bat and ball add to the flexibility of the squad."

Nathan Hauritz is the sole recognised spinner but Steven Smith and David Hussey will also be relied on to deliver regular overs. "Nathan is our preferred spin option and his one-day record in India is excellent," Hilditch said. Hauritz has played seven 50-over games in the country, taking four wickets at 70.75. Hilditch's panel did not pick Hauritz during the entire Ashes campaign but now he expects the offspinner to "be an important part of our bid for this fourth World Cup".

David Hussey's mix of hard-hitting batting and part-time offspin have earned him a trip, despite him playing his first one-day game in more than a year on Sunday. "We feel he will play a crucial role for us in sub-continental conditions," Hilditch said. Tim Paine is the back-up wicketkeeper and will also be a standby batsman.

Australia squad Shane Watson, Brad Haddin (wk), Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, David Hussey, Cameron White, Tim Paine (wk), Steven Smith, John Hastings, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Brett Lee, Shaun Tait, Doug Bollinger.

Tait's inclusion is a bit of a surprise. Brett Lee's experience is invaluable and that alone contributes immensely.

Would have preferred to see Siddle in the team ahead of Tait. Siddle's play is way more wily than Tait.

I do hope Hussey (Mr. Cricket) can make it back in time. He's a quality player and has saved the Aussies on numerous occasions.

I might be loony to suggest this, but I think Oz is going to win the world cup...

i will never write oz off, especially in a WC

Of course Oz can still win. Their domination may have ended but they're still a force to be reckoned with. They still have 7 of their previous cup winners in their team. On their day just about any of the major teams can win so yeah predicting the winner is so tough.

Wow, interesting format!! Quarters are going to be tough.

Based on current form....

Likely qualifiers from Group A:
1.) Sri Lanka
2.) OZ
3.) New Zealand
4.) Pakistan

Likely qualifiers from group B.
1.) England
2.) SA
3.) India
4.) West Indies

So quarters:
Sri Lanka vs West Indies (Sri Lanka to win)
England vs Pakistan (England to win)
OZ vs India (OZ to win)
SA vs New Zealand (SA to win)

Semi's: ?? Not sure of the format here..
SA vs England (SA to win)
OZ vs Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka to win)

Final:
SA vs Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka to win)...

You've been spot on in the past, but hopefully SA can pull it off this time.

I'd say that topping your group is more important now. Before you only had to get to the Super 8 (first Super 6), and then your semi-final was based on the 8 team group. Now you get a knockout team based on your group performance.

Agreed.

Whether you face them in the quarters, semi's or finals you still have to beat the best sides to win the comp. So for me when you face them doesn't really matter.

True. Although there is always a chance that a big side it two could fall in one of the other quarters or semis. Our victory in the last rugby wc was without playing the All Blacks. Anyhow, the most important thing is to won every game and not give any easy wins away.

Overall very happy with the squad. My only concern is colin ingram as the number 7. Not really a natural strokemaker for me. Would rather have take miller or rilee rossouw(not his natural position but he can do it imho) . Maybe rusty for robbie peterson but I suppose to had to pick one to make the politico's happy.

Graeme Smith (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, capt)

Hashim Amla (Nashua Dolphins)

Johan Botha (Chevrolet Warriors)

AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans)

JP Duminy (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Faf du Plessis (Nashua Titans)

Colin Ingram (Chevrolet Warriors)

Jacques Kallis (Chevrolet Warriors)

Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans)

Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors)

Robbie Peterson (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Dale Steyn (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Imran Tahir (Nashua Dolphins)

Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Chevrolet Warriors)

Morne van Wyk (Chevrolet Knights)

SA world cup squad

SA world cup squad
My starting 11 based on that squad would look VERY interesting. lol

I predicted Faf du Plessis and Morne van Wyk... you have to have 2 keepers in the squad.

Robbie Peterson is a bit of a surprise - I had Ryan Mclaren or Albie Morkel.
