Cricket world cup discussion thread

I got 2 wrong... my 15 was based on form and experience and ignored any notion of quotas!

Batsmen:
Graeme Smith (captain)
Hashim Amla
Jacques Kallis
AB de Villiers (wicket keeper)
JP Duminy
Faf du Plessis
Morne van Wyk (reserve w/k)
Colin Ingram

Allrounders:
Wayne Parnell
Johan Botha
[-]Ryan McLaren[/-]
[-]Albie Morkel[/-]
Robbie Peterson

Bowlers:
Dale Steyn
Morne Morkel
Imran Tahir
Lonwabo Tsotsobe

Your definition of all rounder is generously broad, I see.

Edit: Though evidently not enough to include Kallis.

King Kallis is the best Allrounder in the world! But I had my top 6 batsmen (in order) as I would play them every game, so I did not include him in the loosely classified allrounder list.

There is no way Botha or Parnell could ever be considered all-rounders in any sense of the word. Being a bad specialist bowler does not qualify you as an all-rounder.

As I said in the other thread, Lopsy, JP and Amla are certain in the starting 11, with Tahir being another non-white option. What's the point of taking Peterson along in the squad when he's just occupying a spot, and will most likely only play against Canada or whichever minnow is in our group.

If they were going to leave out a white player, it should be Botha.

You forgot Parnell...

So quite obviously Peterson wasn't picked to fill a quota was he??

Whether the selection is right or wrong is entirely a different question.

Selectors have messed up again. Dusty and Albie should be starting in the team, let alone being just squad players...

Tahir I presume is going to be used as the ' X factor ', just hope this plan works for a guy that has not played any international cricket. Its much to ask of a debutant to bring back the world cup...

Why Botha?
Ingram and Faf should be dropped. Maybe more towards Ingram coz he can't bowl...
Botha is a thinking man, good bowler, decent batsmen but a good game reader.

The younger guys need some sort of guidance.

I'm not sure why people are still harping on about Albie's exclusion. He's had enough chances - 51 ODIs to be exact, and he hasn't exactly set the world alight with either bat or ball when representing SA.

Albie has had his chances, i am glad he's not in the squad.
Graeme Smith (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras, capt)

Hashim Amla (Nashua Dolphins)

Johan Botha (Chevrolet Warriors)

AB de Villiers (Nashua Titans)

JP Duminy (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Faf du Plessis (Nashua Titans)

Colin Ingram (Chevrolet Warriors)

Jacques Kallis (Chevrolet Warriors)

Morne Morkel (Nashua Titans)

Wayne Parnell (Chevrolet Warriors)

Robbie Peterson (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Dale Steyn (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras)

Imran Tahir (Nashua Dolphins)

Lonwabo Tsotsobe (Chevrolet Warriors)

Morne van Wyk (Chevrolet Knights)
I think carrying 5 options is weird. I would have replaced Peterson with Rusty or Ryan.

my starting 11:
Smith
Amla
Kallis
De Villers
Duminy
Ingrim
du Plessis
Botha
Steyn
Morkel
Lopsy
4 front line bowlers + du Plessis, Kallis and Duminy to cover the remainder.
we could bat quite deep with this line up as well.
I don't think 4 specialist seamers is the way to go.

this is ablie's batting stats:
played: 51
innings: 38
not out: 8
runs: 679
high score: 97
ave:22.63
strike rate:100.14

bowling:
odi: 51
innings: 47
balls bowled: 1935
runs conceded: 1763
wickets: 50
best figures: 4/29
ave: 35.26
economy: 5.46

based on these stats he doesn't deserve his place.

I agree, but the government says otherwise, so that makes Peterson the best option.

Van Wyk instead of Ingram. He should be keeper as well. Better having a player of AB's calibre in the covers. He does'nt look at ease behind the stumps. Van Wyk would smack the ball around better than Ingram lower in the order.

Ya I think that's also a good option. my current concern with the team playing india is that we don't bat deep. once our no6 is out they into the tail. Botha and co can hold a bat but we need someone more solid at 7.

Seems like wicket-keeping has already started to take its toll on AB. Might as well give Morne the gloves and let him open batting with Smith.

Smith
Van Wyk
Amla
Kallis
AB
Duminy
Faf
Botha/Tahir
Steyn
Morkel
Lopsy

I'm glad to see van Wyk in there. I'm starting to think we're not playing Tahir against India this series because we're holding him back as a secret weapon for the WC.

You might want to check out Johan Botha and Wayne Parnell's stats too before you reach your conclusion. Considering Albie bats at 7/8 the average is immaterial. It's the strike rate that is the more important figure and 100 in 50 over format is pretty impressive.

Wayne Parnell economy rate is currently 6.09 and Johan Botha's average is 40.61 and his strike rate is 52.2 so Albie has fared better there too...

Anyway once again the onus will be on the top 6 to score the runs, which it should be, but then we must be taking the batting power plays in overs 25-40 cause come the end of the innings Johan at 7, Wayne at 8 and Dale at 9 aren't going to be capitalizing on the field restrictions.. By the same token come the end of a match and we chasing the game a bit needing 50 or 60 from 25 or 30 balls to win don't expect those 3 to get us close...

Stupid team.

Only weak and unorganised teams include alot of all rounders.
You specialist individuals in a team.

All the great cricketing nations have and use specialist players.
Do you honestly think the Proteas should play average all rounders?

What a joke! LOL

That's dangerous. he's untested. I would like to see him in the last 2 games.
