Cricket world cup discussion thread

Smith's recent form has been woeful to say the least.....

Hope he and Kallis are saving themselves come knock-outs.....
Agreed... Having a look at Smith's ODI record over the last 2 years it's not all that convincing... by his standards...

EDIT: In the last year his average has been 30 with a strike rate of 73.65 which isn't bad but compared to his career average of 39 with a strike rate of 82.....??

Over the last 2 years Kallis has averaged 47 with a strike rate of 85.
Over the last 2 years Amla has averaged 62 with a strike rate of 94.
Over the last 2 years Smith has averaged 34 with a strike rate of 82.
Over the last 2 years AB has averaged 63 with a strike rate of 101.

Kallis' average is still descent, but Smiths is way to low for our opener. I mean his strike rate is lower than the two batsmen that we called slow in recent years - Amla and Kallis. He needs to up his game.

Rain is expected a bit later. We should bat first if we win the toss to avoid D/L.

Ireland team
WTS Porterfield*, PR Stirling, EC Joyce, NJ O'Brien†, GC Wilson, KJ O'Brien, AR Cusack, DT Johnston, JF Mooney, GH Dockrell, WB Rankin
South Africa team
GC Smith*, HM Amla, MN van Wyk†, JH Kallis, JP Duminy, F du Plessis, CA Ingram, RJ Peterson, J Botha, M Morkel, DW Steyn
Irelend won the toss and choose to bowl first.

Well Ireland won the toss and chose to bowl first, so I guess it worked out ok for us. Will give our batsmen some time in the middle.

Ireland wins the toss. Opts to bowl first. So we bat first.

Ingram in for AB. Still no game time for Lopsy :(

Tahir rests. No point in risking an aggravation of the fracture in a "minnow" game, not that Ireland arte even remotely close to being push-overs.

Well actually Smith's average isn't that bad, if you look at someone like Herschelle, his carreer average is/was 36@83 and he was considered a "fast" batsmen.

Would like to see SA open with Van Wyk. It should take pressure of the middle order, including Ingram. Do hope "Farmer" fires today :)

Gibbs was a bit inconsistent though. When he was bad, he was bad. But on his day, he could single-handedly take apart any team.

Yes, but still Smith at his worst is close to Gibbs' career average, that must mean Gibbs was really bad at some stages and he still made the team. And I don't know if it is because Gibbs is already in the past, but I remember him to be quite good - or maybe it is just the memory of the 438 game that makes him seem better than he was.

Lopsy and Parnell might not get a game in this world cup. Pray there are no injuries to Steyn and Morkel in the latter stages. Aussies seem to also rely on Lee, Tait and Johnson staying fit.

Other comments in Cricinfo regarding Lopsy's absence :(

Surely there would have been no harm in him in the side for Steyn?

For me the strike rate is the important part in one day games, but it would be nicer if the averages could be higher tho.

Smith and Amla are opening. Missed a trick with possibly using Van Wyk?

Already a that of rain, we could do with the 2 points on offer from this game :(

If we finish either first or second in our group, who are we most likely to play in the quarters?
