i don't know, seems turn is going to play a big part:

on a pitch where the ball is taking sharp turn and stopping on the batsmen. Not for the first time this World Cup, Yuvraj Singh was India's best bowler. There has not been much movement for the seamers. It will be interesting to see if the Australian fast bowlers get some under lights

I think Ponting played down how much he was hoping to get on this pitch to make the Indians believe its a difficult track to bat on.
Given how they played I'm sure 280 plus was the real target at the back of his mind especially if M Hussey fired.Good thinking by the captain, if that's the case.

If they knock over sachin and sehwag early it could be indian packing early considering the form their middle/lower order showed vs sa and west indies.
