Cricket world cup discussion thread

You forgot about Kallis. ;) Duminy was also pretty decent /most/ of the matches. Just need a bit of batting beyond him.

The problem in the top five is Smith.

Problem is, you can't put an out of form player in there match after match and hope he gets back into form somehow, especially in a world cup where country is supposed to play the top 11 in form players of their country, dunno if the selectors will ever learn that lesson....

Nope even Kallis, it's time to start fresh and young so he should concentrate on tests. Duminy only bats well when there's no pressure, like he did against Netherlands. He falls apart otherwise.
He can still make the next world cup, imho. Retire after that one, given that his form holds up.

I'm honestly in favour of getting rid of the lot and starting fresh. To me it's not a question of who to drop, it's a question of who to keep.

I'd keep Amla, AB, Steyn, Tahir, Morkel, Lopsy, Faf, Van Wyk and Ingram. Toss the rest of them, and get youngsters in who play without fear (like Miller, who was unlucky to miss out). Then decide on a captain.

I like this viewpoint but I think that we might need one or two more experienced guys on the field to mentor the youngsters. Keep Kallis in there for another year - the guy has BMT which hopefully can rub off. Smith needs a season or two as an opening batsman in an English county to hit the reset button and get his confidence and form back as well as forgetting what it was like to be captain. Then bring him back. He is an amazing, aggressive, hard as nails opening batsman when he is on form. It would be a shame to lose him and I think he will come back big time when the pressure of captaincy is off him. He's young enough for a comeback.

Don't think they will. Playing Morkel ahead of Tsotsobe and playing Botha ahead of Ingram was suicide.

That is the one thing that really annoys me about this world cup and that is not seeing more of Tsotsobe. His variations would have worked so well on these sub-continent pitches. He's an intelligent bowler who I enjoy watching.

Smith doesn't need a psychologist .. he needs a psychiatrist. They should medically drug him b4 batting because there is no other way he's going to play well modafinil , prozac , ritalin .. + one or two other anti-anxiety meds .. truth is you can't tell that guy anything. He'll choke forever and no talk-therapy has helped him. Poor sports psychologist wasting his time with that one

Agree. Was it not Duminy who proudly quipped 'We are no longer chokers' just before the WC.
In future he should just keep quiet.

I'd bring back Boucher for a bit of experience. If anybody has BMT it's that guy. He may bat poorly at times, but cometh the hour cometh the man

I requested that the 15 be presented with their reward on arrival at OR Tambo...

Where are the usual posters in this thread, like to give, but can't take. A lot of "new" names posting in this thread, weird...

In hindsight we bowled really well to restrict NZ to a paltry total. Its the batting that went pear shaped.

Well I'm one of the "new" names posting in the thread - what difference does it make? I've watched the whole tourney but I didn't really post here. And I didn't boast about our team. Now that we've choked (again) though, I'm back to make my disappointment known.

I was thinking that but we really need to blood a new young keeper. Boucher was so good because he was targetted to replace Richardson at a very young age and groomed and managed excellently in his early career. We need to find an under-19 wonderkind and have him apprentice under boucher for a year or two. For the record I think it was stupid not including him in this world cup squad.

Agreed. But we could have been chasing 180 instead if we had more early wickets. And Ingram can hit a 50.
