Lol, Garsfontein and Brooklyn are basically upper to middle middle class. Waterkloof is upper-class.
The problem there securioty villages have is there is no in depth defense, they have the main electrified fence/wall and access control and thats it. I guess most arent allowed to put up their own electric fencing and such around their yard walls. And the residents are lackadaisical about their security.

1. How many out of the six have experienced violence of the following sort:
- armed robbery - yes
- hijacking - yes
- rape - no
- mugging - yes
- kidnapping - no
- shopping mall/restaurant/bank armed robbery - yes
- assault with a weapon - yes
- highway stoning - yes

2. How many out of the six have experienced non-violent crime, including crimes like:
- robbery whilst away from home/away from your possessions - yes
- parked car break-ins and cars stolen - yes
- robot smash-and-grabs without a firearm -yes
- armed robbery - yes
- hijacking - yes
- rape - no
- mugging - yes
- kidnapping - no
- shopping mall/restaurant/bank armed robbery - yes

1. Three people have experienced violent crime.
2. Four have experienced non-violent crime.
3. Eight violent incidents in total:
- 2 armed robberies (during one of them 9 bullets were fired AT a friend)
- 2 hijackings, one with accompanied panga-slashing
- 2 public area armed robberies (one was a bank robbery during which a man was shot; another was a petrol station robbery during which 3 people were shot dead)
- 1 highway stoning
- 1 kidnapping
4. Four non-violent incidents I can recall off the top of my head.
5. Three have experienced only non-violent crime.
6. Everybody has experienced either a violent or non-violent crime.
7. None.

marine1, what I'm interested in with those questions is a measurement of the pervasiveness of violent crime. It's a much better design to insist on limiting it to yourself and the five people you're closest to.
In answering these questions for myself, I find myself astonished at the extent of the violent crime within my little group. I am astonished because I have always considered myself relatively 'lucky' with regards to violent crime in SA... and even after looking at my own stats, I still consider myself relatively 'lucky'. If a good handful of people give answers here, the combined stats will provide an instrument against which we can all measure our perceptions and answer the question- "Are we as 'lucky' or 'unlucky' with regards to violent crime as we perceive ourselves to be?"
