Criteria for 3g towers ?

I would really appreciate if someone could assist with the following.

What criteria is used by Vodacom in deciding which towers will have 3g and which will not ?

The reason why I'm asking is that this morning I drove to my sister's farm in Mpumalanga and on my way there I passed through a 1 horse town where the horse is most probably also dead (about 20 times smaller than where I live) and my Nokia N70 showed that there was 3g reception ! I could not believe it and on my way back this afternoon I stopped there and checked again......3g reception !!!!

I used Celltrack and got the following:-

CellId : 57202 (DF72)
LAC : 75 (004B)
Net : 655 01 (WCDMA)
Name : -
Signal : 100% -59 dBm !!!

Just had my N70 with me so I went onto the net and d/l something and the speed was way faster than what I get here. Just outside the town, 'bout 3km there is a VC tower but there it shows only GSM.

We track data usage and the towers with the highest data utilisation will obviously get upgraded first. That's the easiest bit to decide.

However, then the real world kicks in and numerous factors that could influence the provisioning affects the actual rollout like availability of backhaul, kit or even local resistance to having a new transmitter in the area.

As I always say, Vodacom is not going to pass an obvious opportunity to generate income. If a tower warrants it, they'll do everything possible to rake in the revenue. It's simple Business 101.

So if you're not getting HSDPA in a certain area, one of these factors is stopping it.

Thanks for the reply Vodacom3g.

I do not know what might be the factor stopping us from getting upgraded. There are a lot of data users here, we even had petitions drawn up by some of the cellphone shops to get upgraded. There are plenty of big businesses here and I'm sure nobody will resist to get an upgrade here.

There was an indication from Vodacom last year that we will get upgraded by July this year. Beginning of this year the date was then moved to the end of this year and sometime ago I was advised by sms that it will happen next year (2008) So it seems that every few months the date is moved further away by a few months.

There might be other factors involved that I don't know about delaying the upgrade.

I remember we went through this process a couple of months ago? What did the regional guys say to you at that point?

Vodacom3G

Does this mean that I, my father and all our neighbours that is focussing their Poynting antennas on a tower that is actually 3G enabled will delay the upgrade of our local tower?

No, probably will accelerate it as you'll be overloading the one tower at some point, as well as the back-haul. The best way to off-load towers is to enable more towers around it. The antennas will ensure you're getting better throughputs that will load the backhaul even more.

Write customer care an e-mail stating what you do and your exact setup, location, etc. They'll forward it to the relevant regional planners. These guys always appreciate any feedback that help them get the network as efficient as possible.

Aah, so there's a clue. Get everyone in your "no-3G" area with a data card to buy, say, 10 GB in one month and run the connection flat 24/7. The next month the friendly Vodacom trokkie should show up :D

Might even help him unload the equipment and take him for lunch.;)
