Critique my website

That looks like a beast. I will investigate this (as I understand this is more than just plug n play you actually need a bit of knowledge to use this to get the money's worth.)

For a preamp it is the best value on the market right now. In my humble opinion. When you do podcasting you don't really need anything more than a Scarlett Solo/2i2 or the equivalent. Use cases are important, I/O and I/O specs are use base important.

When you go higher than this SSL you are going into Universal Audio and Apogee territory within the consumer league.

Audient brought this nice one out,
, aimed at beginners. Gain isn't that hard to understand, but the EVO 4 is positioned below their iD4. I actually want to get the EVO 4 to take on the road. It is small and easy to set up, and has more than enough gain range to wake up my mics.

In regard to gain. Just listen to Julian, he knows his schit,

You want a good preamp and a good DAC, the Motu M2/M4 pretty much dominates this segment and it isn't expensive. No stock here though, this was my go-to preamp, but I couldn't get one, so I took the best possible alternative. I have a separate DAC, and no preamp beats the SSL2 at its price point. I am happy.

Dark mode is an unnecessary implementation on a website. I use Night Eye, because I like their auto options more, but it is limited in site use as it is a paid plugin. Good to know more people are spreading the word.

This is very informative.

Just in case people don't know, the guy on this website is not me, I built the website (it's my uncle)

This is me:

But I stopped the videos, because I felt the quality is not what I want it to be - I don't have the skill to do the video editing with B-roll like Linus Tech Tips does it.

However, reading your post now especially around the audio equipment I kind of think I can give this another go. This time around I will use a DSLR with the Elgato to record high-quality video VS using the webcam and then I will get this EVO 4 and use that with my mic, I have a Superlux E205, I too am looking at the Rode Podmic, but I see now as with the Samson this Superlux isn't terrible - maybe just add the EVO 4 or something similar to my set up.

I want to get myself some professional / higher quality equipment like:
  • A camera with a lens
  • An Elgato capture card
  • A pre-Amp
  • A Greenscreen
  • Time - so I can learn and master (semi) Adobe premiere and Audition
  • Lights
Then I think I would give the tech reviews and niche subjects a go -- IoT, Arduino, etc.

I switched to MAGIX Video. For me it is easier, probably because I don't like subs :p I use the Steam Editions which are handicapped, but I like the Steam version more because I can 'carry' it around with me to whichever device I like than to authenticate it every time on a 'new' device.

Audition... You will be surprised how cool music making open source is. Audacity will give you everything you want to drive a podcast. There are many tools which won't cost you a cent. To 'add' quality you need a DAW, many open-source titles out there and most 'lite' editions will do all you want to do. To go studio-like, you will need to explore VST plugins.

Yes, you need time. I had some background, but once you get going you learn. Audio is best learned through practice.

i like how you gave me a wink at the end of the video :thumbsup:

Looking for a bit of constructive criticism, personally I think the site looks good, but that is obviously my own bias so looking for some feedback on what I can improve and if there are any immediate red flags.

It's a normal bootstrap website (with PHP backend).

Edit: If anyone is selling a Logitech C920 Camera please let me know, looking to buy one, cannot find stock anymore.

I can also use some tips on the editing and perhaps a better interviewing setup, some gear recommendation maybe?
Try a darker red on the weekly updates button, danger has always been a bit too bright imho. In fact using palleton with #17A4B8 and then grabbing the darkest blue #026877 from the 'color square' on the right:

I'd suggest for things like these not to just !important it from their current css class names, but rather use css as cascading and make your own tenent/host.custom.min.cs with something like
.tenant-default-blue
{
background-color:#026877
}

Then dropping that into your button's classes at the end so that you can see you actually applied your own styling. I mean there are ways and naming schemes to follow if you prefer a certain methodology.

Listen to Julian, again,

he is using Audition, but you should achieve the same with any other. There are nice driver less integrations as well like Equalizer APO which has many plugins (also VST compatible) and integrations all which are open-source to be used live with anything.

I discuss these things in the CSGO thread :laugh:

This is a whole new world, the first time I read about VST tonight and the immediate rabbit hole became clear - I need to make me some coffee.

Let me toy with this idea a little bit -- I agree the blue is definitely better - I used the red to make that button POP and get people's attention. Will maybe do some AB testing see which color works best in terms of sign-ups

So Thor... what did you do with this C920?

That is still mine (for Thor's corner) FCA on the other hand is my uncle who lives far away in a remote dorpie and I also use it daily for work (Zoom meetings...Urgh)

Loads nice and quick
Appreciated, I attribute that to the site being text-heavy so very lightweight in terms of assets to load. And of course, because this is done with custom/bespoke PHP so no libraries or frameworks or CMS stuff.

You 'physically' attend Zoom? I work in my onderbroek, shirt and tie.

Now that I know that your uncle needs it it would be best to go with the Logitech. The C920 and up is good with correction, because cheaper brands require some technical intervention. Since he lives in a dorpie, you must tell him to allow as much light as possible into the room where he does his recordings. It is hard to explain how and where the ligthing must be, but in layman the more 'natural' light the better his quality is supposed to be which isn't necessarily the case, but he will get the gist.

The Razer Kiyo was cheap some time ago, and it is a very good podcasting webcam. It is 720p, but the key light does it wonder.

Find a friend who knows something about shooting video and ask them to help. A cellphone on a tripod is going to do a far better job than a webcam.

@Thor

When you take this serious to the point you are investing into a sound studio, do add a shotgun mic. When you start to edit your recordings you will quickly understand why. You don't have to add an expensive boom/shotgun mic. I use the Avermedia mic which I connect to my preamp with a VXLR+ and it helps so much with atmosphere and tones. My next addition is a lavalier.

I have seen many podcasts, and most people use mics to punt themselves. Like people using SM7B's and RE20's, these mics are all legend status broadcasting mics with use cases, but many think it changes them into Morgan Freeman, but it does have an elitist attachment to it. I have seen real expensive mics in poor quality made videos, and I won't be surprised that some mics are rentals. I know, many only use the shotgun recording which is easily noticed with how people talk into their mics.

Good luck with the venture.

I am doing this at the moment. I can't stop playing with Filmic and mcpro24, mcpro24 is better. However, I use this in addition to a webcam setup, I don't like a single android-webcam solution as there are some reliability issues. It is sad that EpocCam isn't as good on Android as it is on iPhone. IP Webcam and DroidCamX isn't reliable to do live recording with.

A good webcam with appropriate light is optimal, the principle applies in general.

The problem with this is syncing the audio.

I did consider the lavelier, I like it.

I just need to figure out how to do the software, right now I record into OBS or I Record into Camtasia which will work nicely with the Elgato capture card and a DSLR for video and a USB mic., so will need some kind of wireless lav, but then figured might as well stick to the condenser mic above the screen. Out of mind, out of sight.

Excuse the crappy photo, had to use the Sonoff to take a pick of myself, lol.
