My biggest fear is that a Xbmc link like Nowvideo for instance uses p2p without me knowing it and I get shaped. Although I tested all the popular links and all comes through port 80, I just fear for that one unknown p2p link and a angry wife and daughter thereafter lol.

I agree with you guys on this one. There are too many things that uses P2P these days (Gaming updates, some streaming service etc) that I decided I'll rather use a capped unshaped account from CW.

If you are referring to steam, the p2p thing can be prevented by the server you choose. I for instance am on the Johannesburg IS Gaming server, everything comes down via HTTP. I think there is a WA Cape Town server also that uses pure HTTP. Regarding streaming, not sure I ever came across a service that uses P2P, but I mostly use the links XBMC gives me or Netflix. You referring to twitch maybe? I think they can white list some streaming services that utilises p2p for streaming, not sure.

See here is my biggest fear, I don't use P2P or NNTP over the net at all, but if you look at my unmarked entry it is close to 5GB. Yes unmarked can be any port besides port 80 and port 119, but it can also mean I can likely be shaped on a more constant basis than I would prefer.

Not only steam. Final Fantasy 14 uses P2P, I think League of Legends does (not sure). I'm sure there are quite a few games not on steam that uses P2P.

I've configured my P2P client to run on a fixed port. Set up a schedule rule that starts at 00:00 and ends at 06:00. Then, in port forwarding, set the forwarding for the P2P port to be activated according to the schedule rule. I've probed the traffic and this stops all P2P traffic in its tracks. Before applying this, I had (low levels of) random P2P traffic to my media server outside of scheduled hours due to (I suspect) local peer discovery and DHT (even with scheduling applied in the torrent client).

I've got a D-Link DSL2760u and it's not that spectacular for configuration, so I'm sure the TP-Link will be able to do this as well (it's the router I was going to upgrade to).

It looks like CW have plans in place with respect to the shaper, but I like taking a belt and braces approach. There is no reason why my torrent clients should be running outside the P2P window.
I will look at this. The fixed port is already done, as it forms part of my QoS.

yes. but options was only mentioned in the cancellation notice. I would not had any problem paying more.

your making me out as some crook or monster yet I did show already several untruths that had been posted about me by you...

I'm not innocent. I'm well aware I used one hell of a lot of data. and I've been told by you (Shaun) to keep my levels the same as the previous month, but not to go mad and exceed previous use....

you were asked if it would be a problem beforehand to be using file hosting (multihosters) services with a negative reply from you.

rules don't change from day to day.

I've read the file hosting service sites from beginning to end and its nowhere mentioned its to bypass shaping or trying in any way to do so... you can choose whether you want your downloads as http or as https. https is done via encryption for safety. that's no difference.

but I do know that this is standard Cybersmart accounts "P2P, automated downloads and news servers are restricted between 07:00AM and 12:30AM. The restriction is lifted and access is restored, outside of these times." that's standard practice for CS accounts.

I'm no coward. I can and always do admit when I'm wrong. but I don't like to be accused of stuff I'm not guilty of.

If you looking for sympathy, you not going to get it here. If you knew you were going to abuse the account, you should have offered to purchase an account that was suited to your needs beforehand. You effectively ripped off the ISP by going overboard and now you are complaining that you aren't offered any other options.

I agree uncapped should be uncapped yes, but unless Telkom leads the way, the hands of ISP's are tied. Im not for one second saying these guys don't make money, but surely if you paying R300 a month and downloading 700gigs, they are going to make a huge huge loss. Im very sure I did about 200 gigs this month and I've heard no complaints.

I've changed my approach to downloading. When looking at big files, I ask myself whether I really am going to watch it/use it, and if I don't need it, I don't bother downloading it. People seem to add items to their queue for the sake of it. We've learnt with OW that having big downloaders is simply not sustainable. Nothing has changed..

I still don't understand ppl downloading 700gb.
Are you downloading series & movies for friends and charging them?

I see that this is how my setup is, but it only affects 1 pc or am I wrong?
Any other device on my LAN will still be able to trigger P2P, accidentally or intentionally?

Here's what I want if possible.

Just throwing this out there for no reason except I'm bored.

My ideal account would allow for this use case:

Streaming radio during office hours
SUPER fast RDP & SSH to international servers
Fast browsing in the day (no downloading)
Torrents after 10PM until 6AM

In the past I had to dial a capped account at 10Mbps during the day, and then use a 4Mbps uncapped account for torrents in the evening.

But since joining Crystal everything has been almost perfect without any annoying account switching :)

CW, Paul, DJ, please look at my previous posts if possible and tell me if a account like this will be possible for me and need be if there will be a cost increase and what it is before I do my EFT.

If that's the setup on your router, and all other torrent clients have the same fixed port, it should work for all of them. Of course, you have to schedule all the ports this way (including NNTP, which I've not done yet - but because NNTP is initiated by my client, I doubt it's prone to the same issues as torrent clients. With torrents, other users in the swarm were initiating the communication with my client.).

There are no further torrent clients that I'm aware of, but I don't have access to all the pc's/laptops.
That is why I would have loved to have a P2P block function on my router.

I don't know if this will help, but I've noticed that torrent clients open their ports on the router automagically. If you login to your router from time to time, you can apply the schedule to the forwarding rules for these ports.

Won't stop torrents working. Torrent clients establish connections both ways, so the outgoing connections will still get through.

Ah okay. Will check the logs.

This is UPnP.

The torrent client ask the router to open a port of it's choice, so that traffic can get back in.
Disabling this has no effect on traffic going out though.
