@Crystal Web: just wanted to ask with regards to shaping. Do you guys shape things like popcorn time or plex bittorrent? Basically streaming torrents. While I know this is pretty much illegal I'm sure there are people that still do this. Since this makes use of torrents (p2p), does this also fall under the shaping policy?
 
on topic for a second, how will you handle limiting people on 10mb lines that go with 4mb/s(for line sharing w/ roommate), will you limit it to 4mb/s (512kB/s) or limit it to 3.5mb/s(425kB/s+overhead)

Yes, because we don't do DPI (necuno :p ) there's no way for us to distinguish between the type of torrents you're using. Besides, torrents are torrents are torrents, to be honest. We shape the protocol. So I'm afraid this sort of traffic will be shaped, depending on the package you're on.

I'm sorry, I'm still not following here. Can you explain what you mean in a little more detail? On a 10Mb line there is no 4Mb limit that I'm aware of.

The problem with most "free" addons is they don't use a CDN network, and are usually built quite poorly, as well as having disparate storage systems, and no dedicated delivery systems. The ability to test these services as an ISP is just about 0%, let alone actually prioritise them.

We also can't prioritise everything - we'd love to. Hence why we make it simple - we shape p2p and nntp. We prioritise certain other traffic on our network, and the vast majority of this is real-time video. But we can't prioritise an addon in XBMC for example, as that inevitably involves a hundred different sources and protocols. Unless of course that addon is Netflix, for example.

We'd love to offer unshaped, uncontended at cheap prices but this simply isn't a reality for any ISP. More so for ISPs in SA. When you buy a service that's supposedly unshaped and uncapped, it's NOT uncontended! And I'll be honest with you here, they're desperately hoping that 99% of their users are using only a fraction of their line at any given point in time. If all of their subscribers chucked a few massive 3D Bluray rips and let them go full speed all hours every day, that ISP would be out of business quicker than Mweb go to the competition commission.

Until there are massive reductions in IPC and international bandwidth, but mostly IPC, or until quantum entangled communication becomes a reality (work in SA happening on this right now), we're forever subjected to having to degrade certain performance. The trick is to get this balance right and at the right cost to the ISP and the end user. We believe we've got this right, and we try to make it as simple as humanly possible for our customers. We'll shape your p2p and nntp traffic and try to give you full line speed on everything else at all times.

haha no, this was not intended for CW or any ISP, I suppose I did a bad thing and hijacked this thread to share mine, apologies for that. But while we are on the subject, everything XBMC works perfect, so don't change a thing. :)

I think he might mean he has a 10mbps line, but will only get a 4mbps account maybe?

I think he means:

10 mbs line on a 4 mbs package, will it go 4mbs or 10mbs.

not exactly to that degree but i mean do you throttle it to 4mb/s or what you'd get on a 4mb/s line(3.5mb/s) for instance with telkom used to get 500kBps and mweb(on the 1 in 10 times a month im not throttled) i used to get ~400kBps.

not like it's the end of the world either way just curious.

so essentially, you want to know if you will get any benefit from overhead?

I was told that you cannot get a 4MB account if your line syncs at 10Mbs :erm:. Their accounts run at the the speed your line syncs, or so i was told, which I found kinda strange...

I then read later on this thread, that things may change again once they go live, so I have no idea what the current status of that situation is.

that is strange but until we upgrade to VDSL i can only use half my speed anyways as we split it 50/50 with net limiter
my line only syncs at 7mb i had to phone telkom like 10 times to get them to just give me a 10mb/s xD(but theres no way im paying for 10mb per second if i only get to use half of it at any time

if they do it like that then how will they even know when someone signs up for an account through the website without telling them beforehand the linespeed
