I was told that you cannot get a 4MB account if your line syncs at 10Mbs :erm:. Their accounts run at the the speed your line syncs, or so i was told, which I found kinda strange...

I then read later on this thread, that things may change again once they go live, so I have no idea what the current status of that situation is.

That sounds like the correct policy for capped accounts, but not really for uncapped.

The system will always interrogate your exchange to run at optimal speeds. This is the way it was designed, for various reasons. This results in your account automatically pushing to 10Mbps if you run a lower speed account on a higher line, but we are looking at getting rid of this sort of system, perhaps. It's the way the upstream provider manages speed sync.

what stops someone from signing up for a 4mb account with a 40mb/s VDSL connection

The fact that you are paying for a 40mbps VDSL line would stop you from getting only a 4mbps account. But with capped accounts, generally it is a fixed price for an amount of data, and it syncs at whatever speed your line is. For uncapped, it makes sense to have packages for each speed.

that is strange but until we upgrade to VDSL i can only use half my speed anyways as we split it 50/50 with net limiter
my line only syncs at 7mb i had to phone telkom like 10 times to get them to just give me a 10mb/s xD(but theres no way im paying for 10mb per second if i only get to use half of it at any time

if they do it like that then how will they even know when someone signs up for an account through the website without telling them beforehand the linespeed

We'll ensure everyone is informed, if we don't change the policy/systems.

But I have to admit, I'm still rather lost regarding your question. You want to know if we limit 10Mb to 4Mb or if 4Mb gets some or other speed?

Ah, but this is where our product development kicks in. There is a very specific reason for wanting the two to live in harmony. ;)

well the question is now no longer relevant I think, as it sync up to your speed. He wants to know if he will get an overhead benefit if he uses a 4mbps account on a 10 mbps line, for example will he get 500kbps, or 400kbps. That is how I understood it at least.

Well, you can, sort of. And I'll assign someone to manually correct the account each month if you'd like, but we'd honestly prefer to stick with an automated system. There are numerous reasons why this happens, and many of these reasons will become apparent later when our full product suite is unveiled. And we may look at ways to prevent the bursting up to full speed.

Now you are just making me curious about what's going on in the back end of this system :p ....very curious

so there's absolutely no difference or tiering between 4mb and 10mb clients?

Oh, well yes, he will. His overhead issue was line related in the first place, not account related. So upgrading your line will result in full speed on the ISP side.

don't worry about i think my question was answered :/

I think what he means is if he has a 4Mb uncapped account with a 10Mb ADSL line, will he get 4Mb or 3.5Mb max speed?

Edit: Okay some other posts came in before I refreshed the page.

They are rate limited, yes. Exchange data plays a part.

I'm still not 100% sure what it is you're saying.

From what I can make out, you have a shared 10Mb connection and split this connection between people? If so, then I'm still not quite understanding the problem.
Or you only sync at 7Mbps so don't want to pay for 10Mbps? So opt for 4Mbps instead?

i know it would be hard on you, but a few of people can't get their full 10mb/s on their line and are tied to it by contract(telkom 25% discount is removed if you downgrade meaning downgrading to 4mb/s(breaking contract fee :())

Oh right. You've got a 10Mb line but want a 4Mb ISP account?

If so, I'll make a plan for you and for fjorko on that basis if you really want. Our 10Mb pricing is really good though in our opinion. :D

lol, how many tech guys does it take to answer 1 confusing support question.

Answer:

He somehow answers himself :D
nah i didnt answer myself it was answered the second he said they dont even have a system
just to clear the confusion its actually both :D the line is shared and even if it wasn't i still would be wary of a 10mb/s product
i know your price is good but i litterally get a phone call and get *****ed at if im using more than 4mb/s xD
