Crystal Web (NEW ISP) ADSL Feedback

Connection is very intermittent at the moment. Works for 20 seconds, dead for twenty seconds, rinse, repeat.

That doesn't sound like an account related issue. If it's going dead then it probably has nothing to do with the international issue. We'll certainly need to investigate further. Please drop a mail to support with all of the details relating to what you're experiencing and we'll sort it out for you.

Mailed support :) (even tapatalk is a nightmare to use)

Sounds to me like a line issue but we'll properly investigate for you. Your line stats are fine though, so if anything this could be exchange congestion related. We are launching an exchange congestion database as well to assist the wider market in general.

Other accounts works 110%, so I doubt its that :)

At what quality should I expect to stream a youtube video with no buffering on a 2MB account? 240p? 360p?

Up to 480 depending on how well the file was encoded. If the file is not locally cached in SA it might be subject to the international issue at the moment. If it is locally cached and encoded properly then you can expect 480p on a 2Mb line.

Thanks for the feedback. Must admit, have never been able to watch youtube with Telkom. Now its a big part of my evening with my wife. Hooked in "come dine me" episodes LOL. Quality is set to auto and normally that makes it 240p. But its not too bad.

Another question regarding the news server. Can I ask it here, or should I rather send a PM or e-mail?

You should be getting better than 240p.

Depends on the nature of the question, I guess. But we're not supporting the news server directly from mybroadband, although general questions we may answer. No guarantees. Especially when it comes to proprietary information.

You should set it to 480p and see what happens.
I can stream HD but youtube often auto sets it to 240p.
Set it to HD and it streams without an issue.

The "Auto" setting in youtube has never given higher than 240p. You think I should send support a e-mail to query? Also have to add, have never tried to set it manually any higher so no idea how setting it higher will respond in terms of buffering.

Will e-mail you the question on the news server rather.

Much appreciated. Will try this before bothering support.

Thanks guys. Will give it a bash when I get home.

P.S. no other problems with crystal web (not that the youtube thing is a problem). Must admit, it takes a bit of getting used to, to have internets that actually works while the sun is out. LOL

Are you guys going to throttle Sopcast and AceStream protocols as I find those are the best options (especially Sopcast) for streaming live sporting events.

We'll shape p2p traffic on the current uncapped accounts, and both sopcast and Acestream are p2p protocols.

The chances of Sopcast or Acestream streaming all day is very low though anyway so surely you'd avoid the shaping?
Also take note that there are very often Youtube streams which come through at 720p.

Ja, I use them for only viewing live sports and daily viewing will be on weekends and then not all day as per traditional torrent downloads.
I thoughts IPS's throttled and shaped torrents protocols regardless of capacity usage (ie 1 hour per day or 8 hours per day)

My sports of choice are Rugby (local and international) and most cricket - I am sure Olympics and the soccer world cup will be on Youtube.

There's simply no way to build a shaper around a sports schedule.

Not sure if there's a market for that kind of thing - if there is we'll look into it but it's going to be a niche market, and only serve to complicate our offering. We have something in the pipeline though that will please a great deal of people...
